A friend of mine has an opportunity to acquire a 6 cylinder Cummins diesel in a towmotor. It sounds like it got the small individual valve covers and it's tan in color. Anybody over on this side know how to identify what generation Cummins this is (maybe by the injector pump?) and whether or not it's interchangeable with the on highway version.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks

Check the lower driver side edge of the timing cover for a nameplate with the CPL number.

These are your two possible 'road' pumps; the VE and the P-pump. I caution, they are sometimes used for convenience on stationary/marine/pump applications and need to be re-tuned or built for good road manners.

There is also the Lucas CAV pump which is (afaik) strictly for stationary/marine applications.

VE might show up in newer than '93 industrial engines. Is it intercooled? The #1 valve cover can have a white decal with a black number that can also help identify it. The VE pumps are different from IC, and non IC. Cams........different. Here is a good start to seeing what you have, pit falls and expenses to research.
