I ran a 300tdi Discovery on WVO. They have a VE type pump but Land Rover also installed a lift pump from factory, the factory one was mechanical and when it failed I installed a Walbro FRB pump. Worked well for me on WVO.
Interesting setup. Would be good to use as a mobile filtration unit, I'm planning a road trip of a few months and trying to work out filtering on the road.
I've tried WMO in two DI engines. Well filtered and thinned 50% with diesel. One was a NA Isuzu and the other a turbo 300tdi Land Rover. In both I got coking, much more in the 300tdi.
I use a hand rotary pump similar to above, I mainly collect WVO and it deal with this thick oil well. My experience with the cheap 12V pumps is not so good, fail fairly quickly on thick oil.
Nice work, centrifuge is great for removing water. I get a fair amount of old heating oil from people who have moved to natural gas for heating. Often it has a bit of water in it and the centrifuge cleans it up nicely.
People have used it for blending with WVO and it's used in some fuel additives. I'd be wary of using it in too high a percentage, as you say it is a heavy solvent.
Do some mixes and see how much you need to get good viscosity and take it from there.
I send it to the oil disposal at the local tip. With waste veg oil and veg oil with too many solids I mix it with hardwood sawdust I get from a local furniture maker. Put the mix in small cardboard boxes and burn them in my wood heater. They pack a punch and really reduce the amount of wood I...
Thanks for the replies.
The 4BD1 is similar to the cummins engine and uses a Bosch copy pump.
No history of WVO use so there shouldn't be any issues there.
The engine is in good condition with not a lot of hours on it so I wouldn't expect wear to be an issue.
Smoke was a light gray in...
I've run my 300Tdi Land Rover on WVO for the past couple of years with very little trouble. So I thought I'd try WMO in my 4BD1 powered Land Rover. These engines are a 3.9 DI engine, mechanical injection and no turbo.
Oil was settled for a few months (mix of engine oil and ATF) , thinned with...
Like your work. I'm thinking of doing something similar but was looking at using a pump feeding a header tank with a float switch to cycle the pump to keep the header tank topped up with oil. I've got a 12V gear pump here and a float switch is pretty cheap. Will have an overflow back to the main...
Cheers Clb,
Tell you what we are jealous of the diesels you get there. We never got the US diesel engines in great numbers here and the ones that are here are pricey to buy.
Hi folks,
Live in Melbourne Australia and have a few oil burners in the shed.
Everyday car is a 97 Land Rover Discovery 300TDI (2.5 litre) We use it for towing our small camper trailer and a bit of off road fun. It runs on a blended mix of veg oil and heating oil.
Also have a 91 Land Rover...
I don't envy the cold you guys have to deal with, I lived in Quebec as a kid and remember the winters there. It rarely gets below 0 here so issues with flow are not too great. I like the idea of a pre filter, I've got an old Bosch filter head here and a pile of filters, might look into something...
Just came across this thread (and forum) I've just setup a WVO raw power fuge here in Australia.
I was holding off buying one due to the poor Aus dollar but them came across one second hand but unused locally. Have filtered WVO that I run blended in a 97 Land Rover Discovery, it did this far...
