I pulled the bed off my 86 long bed to work on the fuel tanks.
In all the discussions concerning bed bolts I understand they have a long square shank.
The two middle bolts are like that but the two front and rear have a long double d shank.
It's not a mismatch that is what the holes in the bed...
i'm looking to replace my 1986 original running lights on my f250
asking for replacement suggestions and installation suggestions and gotchas
i'm not looking for top of the line super cool
hoping for decent quality direct replacement
well i got the timing cover repaired and gaskets should be here today.
many times these large thin gaskets are difficult to keep positioned during assembly.
i've read that some use a thin layer of rtv, a thin layer of lithium grease, and just oil.
maybe there's no wrong solution if it works.
the two bottom welded nuts on the timing cover are stripped.
if i use helicoils to repair these i'm thinking i should use locktite to make sure they stay in place.
and then use a sealer on the bolts.
well using a few cold chisels and a couple of crowbars i got it off
i'm pretty sure i can hammer it back flat :)
it was as i expected the two bottom nuts are stripped
now i'm waiting on a seal and gaskets
there was rtv on the oil pan and ip gear cover and just gasket elsewhere
is that what is...
i got everything stripped and ready to pull the timing cover.
i now see that the timing cover is tucked in under the ip gear cover.
i'm guessing that has to be at least loosened to get the timing cover off.
am i on the right track?
things did not go as well as i would have hoped.
the two bottom bolts that i believe are threaded inserts in the timing cover were bad.
both were barely snug when i took them out.
when i put them back one snugged up and one was almost no resistance.
i drove the truck a few times and had no leaks...
i finally got everything buttoned up and no leaks ... so far.
the manual says to use sealer on the two top and two bottom bolts.
what do these bolts open in to?
that Flowkooler pump looks great but i have already bought one.
my fan clutch came off pretty easy. a big adjustable wrench and a few wraps with a hammer and it broke loose.
two issues i've not seen discussed is getting the old gasket off and weather or not to use sealer.
the old gasket had...
my water pump is leaking so i thought i'd ask for input from y'all while i wait for it. it looks like getting the fan clutch off without special tools may be a pain. and what about antifreeze? is cavitation a problem on these 6.9l's?
my 86 has an inside hood latch. i noticed the cable sheathing is missing in some places and the cable is rusty. if the cable broke how could i get the hood open?
what a dumb$$$
i didn't add the link
i wanted to add this under the truck after the fuel selector valve before the pump
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/wix-5291/filters-16470/fuel-filter-water-separator-12305/6bf814fc80d2/wix-fuel-filter/wf10122/4837179
i think this filter has a lot of surface area and would be a good filter before the electric fuel pump
i'll be danged if i can find the right canister for it
any info appreciated
just a little more info
since it appears i'm go'n to be replacing about all of the fuel system
what extra considerations if any are there for running biodiesel in this old stock engine
reading this thread it seems the advice is to torque the head bolts even if there is no obvious problems
since it's advised to loosen then tighten each bolt would it be acceptable to replace the bolts one at a time
i'm trying to work up a parts list and pre-purchase as much as i can before i start
new fuel tanks can be had for about $100 each
should i clean the old tanks or buy new ones
neither of the sending units work
should i wait and try to repair the old ones or buy new ones
i've only had marginal...
just one more thing
@gandalf you are dead on
i posted my original request on the dieselstop forum the same time i posted here
it has had 188 views and not one response
thanks again
i'll be back
since you said the ball was clear i took a closer look and it is still in there
i removed the fuel caps and blew out the line with about 20 psi
i could hear it blowing through both tanks
i checked the housing pressure cold advance and the pin extended and re-tracked ok
i drove it a few miles and...
