    Strange Cruise Control Issue

I will check that out. I did replace the steering column bearings a couple years back as the bearings had dis integrated. Maybe the brushes are unhappy in their proper location after wearing incorrectly for so long.

    Strange Cruise Control Issue

My 1994 IDI has been having a weird issue lately. The truck did not originally have cruise control, but I swapped in a servo, horn pad, and disconnect switch and was off to the races. It worked great for a few years and then recently has been giving fits. The cruise will be working fine and...

Got to do a rear brake job.... any advice?

I did a brake job on mine a few weeks ago and I’ll second getting the proper tools. Some of the springs are a ****** to get on, I was wishing I had a third arm.

So what did you do with your truck today?

I’m pretty sure I have a newer version of this same mower. Mines a 28”, one big blade. It cuts nice, fits through a gate, and was cheap. The only thing I don’t like is all the interlocks. The most annoying was a mechanical system that didn’t allow you to reverse with the mower running until you...

Cheaper Alternative to NAPA Coolant Test Strips

Thanks, I'll look those up. I have a bunch of that in my garage. It's what I use in my newer Dodge pickup. Does the SCA ever need to be "topped up" with the Z05? I guess I'm not sure it needs to be topped up with the NapaKool, it's just been quite a while since I've tested it. I haven't...

Cheaper Alternative to NAPA Coolant Test Strips

I have a bottle of NAPA coolant test strips that I bought a couple years back when I got my IDI. Last time I went to test coolant the strips had gone bad. The bottle contained ~50 strips and I had used maybe ten. A new bottle of strips from NAPA is $40 and I was wondering if there was a less...

White Smoke When I Let Off

I drove the truck yesterday and it behaved normally. I can’t explain why, but it appears the fuel filter may have been causing the issue. Or something gummed up in the fuel system that the cleaner helped work it’s way through. I checked timing again this morning with the new filter and it’s...

White Smoke When I Let Off

I should have written it down. I still have the probes on the engine and I’ll check it when I start it up again. I’d like to see if it changes at all with the new fuel filter.

White Smoke When I Let Off

I replaced the fuel filter this morning, filled it with diesel kleen and ran it for 30 seconds or so to hopefully get the cleaner to the injectors and let it sit for a while. Maybe it will clean things up enough to run for now, assuming that’s a contributing factor. It was due for a filter anyway.

White Smoke When I Let Off

Ok got it to work, it’s at 10.4 at 2000 RPM. I was hoping it would be further off. Next I figured I’d check each injector line to see if there’s any effect on idle. Not sure what else to check. I was also going to check the fuel supply pressure to see if the lift pump was working. It didn’t...

White Smoke When I Let Off

It does matter, the manual cautions against connecting the magnetic probe before the unit is powered up. I cleaned and reconnected everything one more time and it shows ROM now but timing is always -20.

White Smoke When I Let Off

I tried to check my timing today but the timing unit didn’t work. I have the DTI Tech-Time. Initially it would read rpm but no timing event. I cleaned and reinstalled the clamp on the fuel line and it read -20 regardless of RPM. I took all the probes off and reinstalled them, and now I can’t get...

White Smoke When I Let Off

I always thought retarded timing caused higher EGT as the combustion event occurs closer to the opening of the exhaust valve. That may be wrong with diesels, I don't know for sure. I did try pushing the advance piston yesterday while idling. It definitely made the engine run poorly when I...

White Smoke When I Let Off

I haven’t yet but that’s the first thing I’ll look at once I get to work on it. The change happened suddenly, it was running fine then I tried to merge onto the freeway and noticed the EGT, and the missing after I set the cruise. I’ve got a timing meter just need to find it. I moved a year ago...

White Smoke When I Let Off

I haven’t been around here much lately other than lurking. The truck has been just running so I haven’t needed to! While on a trip to go pick up some pets for my other truck today I noticed a drop in power and EGT trending about 200 degrees higher than what I’d say was normal. This was for all...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Haha I’m sure you’re right. I remember we had some contractors I worked with for a couple years from Alabama. After I got to the point I could understand what they were saying they were a riot. It’s pretty crazy how much ranching goes on down here. It’s like western ND but the crops are...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Thanks, people are a little different from ND, but not as far apart as I thought it would be. I can’t compare to northern FL as I have very little experience there. We have been here 6 weeks or so and like it so far. I think it will be odd (in a good way) as I get closer to fall and don’t have...

So what did you do with your truck today?

It’s been a while since I’ve been on here, but I just finished a cross country move from North Dakota to South Florida, ~2100 miles, pulling a fully loaded 16’ enclosed trailer. Had to shut off the ac on a few of the hills but it happily chugged along at 60-65. I noticed after a half day or so...

Valvoline gear oil in Flex Fill container

Wouldn’t you be able to drain the soft-side containers too? I would think you would. I haven’t seen them, but I’d imagine they’re stiff enough to stand upside down.

    Easy Fuel Additive system

I ended up using 1/2L Dr. Pepper bottles for my additive. The bottles around here have a conical/funnel shaped top half that fits like it was made for it. I put in 8-10 oz. of anti-gel and the rest 2-stroke oil, then use one bottle per tank when I fill up.

Valvoline gear oil in Flex Fill container

This is a great idea. I can't imagine there would be any more left in those than the little bit I can't get out of the plastic jugs.

Saw this at an auction today.

Auctions are funny that way sometimes. I was watching a local online auction and there was a small lawn cart that I could have used. After the premiums and fees were added, it sold for more than a new one costs.

So what did you do with your truck today?

I had to move mine out of the way to clear snow yesterday. It was -4F, and I doubted it would start, but it did with little effort. Last year I couldn’t get it to go below about 10F,, but the timing was way off. I fixed that over the summer so I think that’s why it starts better. Then I got...

    Aluminum radiator upgrade

I would guess the fact that they are used in modern vehicles has more to do with cost. They make the same call you did. If you can solve the problem for a third of the cost, that's what you do. I work in a sugar factory, and we have big evaporators that use tube sheet heat exchangers. On...

    Aluminum radiator upgrade

I haven't looked it up, but I think thermal conductivity of copper is something like twice what aluminum is.
