Top end assembly after sitting for a year

I guess I’m just double checking in case it’s not as straight forward as I imagine, and to see if anyone has any extra steps they’d throw in. As far as I understand you pull the plug and pour oil through the oil fill and valley. Maybe blow some air through the port holes in the block? I’m a...

Top end assembly after sitting for a year

Hey all. I’m about to reassemble my engine after taking my heads off for a valve job about a year ago. I’ve been adamant about keeping everything covered while the van has been sitting, but to be safe I want to do a good oil rinse through the valley/etc before I get going. advice is greatly...

    Valley pan plug alternative/replacement?

Hey y’all. Took my heads off a few months ago for a valve job and I’m just now getting back to reassembling the top end/etc. long story short I can’t find the old valley pan drain plug. You know how it goes. Must have snuck away from me at some point. So it’s a hard part to find in 2021. Anyone...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

The heads I ordered just arrived and there are two considerable blade marks on the mating surface. I can catch my fingernail on them. also some messy lookn crack repairs that are right up against the seats The precups all have cracks as well. I’m aware that’s often not a problem but just...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

The only crack that I could make out was on the intake seat. The crack on the other head was marked on an intake valve but I couldn’t see it. I found a pair of rebuilt heads from a place in Grand Prairie, TX. shop.headsonly.com $400 each plus $100 shipping including a return slip for the...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

Ya I’ve been pretty bummed out at times working on this thing, but you get kinda good at it after awhile. I also got it a lot easier not having a turbo to work around, and the dog house has its perks. I’m sure I’ll be eating these words in a week or so...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

Nick! I’ve read your write up so many times man! I don’t think I would of had the confidence to do the job without it. I almost rented a crane before I went with the 2x4. I’ll definitely have an extra hand for the install. You ended up getting heads from diesel cast welding right? Do you...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

I forgot to add that before I took the heads in, I could feel some noticeable play in the #1 exhaust valve while it was still loaded.

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

Thanks everyone. All cylinders and piston heads look good, including #1. Not sure about the rings though and I’m not going to be pulling this engine to check. Unfortunately all the valves/springs/etc were left in a box without note of where they were in the head. Some valves have more wear/play...

Trust machine shop and buy new heads or hold out for a second opinion??

Hi everyone. First post. 1990 e350 non turbo started chuffing, occasionally ticking/knocking, eating oil, comp test showed 400-450 all around except for #1, which was 200. Still had good power with no smoke, but the idle was rough and the chuff/tick was getting worse. Rockers, pushrods, lifters...
