Haven't updated my build in a while. Mostly driving. Not so much working on the rig these days which is nice though I am due for a refresh on the engine soon, ip, injectors and turbo on top of everything else. It will happen at some point but for now it's still my daily driver.
These trucks are...
Just throwing my 2 cents in.
12 point (aka. ferry cap screws) are closer
to grade 9 (180,000psi tensile). Not the same a s a run of the mill grade 8 (150,000psi)
Aircraft/mil spec is a whole different animal as well if you're into reading up on those sorts of things
So . Yes these bolts are...
Made a small adapter to facilitate the hose seal on the exterior of the intake snail. Been fighting that hose wanting to slip off since I got the truck. Have some devcon that should hold it on nicely . Could weld it up. But not setup for tig at home and had more important matters at hand.
Cleaned up the intake hat. Needs a bead for the hose connection desperately. Looking to fix that before it goes back together.
And I had to cobble together a setup on the vise for rusted hardware extraction.
Managed a few extra minutes after work to blast the y pipe , cross over and up pipe. Better to just get it done now.
Slip joint had a good amount of corrosion and will need some help sealing . Picked up ceramic paste sealant hoping it will do the job.
Thanks for the info guys. I would love to cerakote everything but not this time around. I had planned to take my time on this repair and do it right but as usual I can't plan for everything.
Spent most of my day Saturday drilling out all the broken exhaust studs on my brother in law's cylinder...
Ahh gotta learn something new everyday.
So as I'm obviously missing the heat shielding. What options do i have here. Is there a source for the shield? Aftermarket options? @Thewespaul whats your recommendation ?
Thank you @aggiediesel01
I did get the install kit from russ. Thank you @typ4...
Thanks @Thewespaul
Will probably leave it as is then vs trying to wrestle with it. When i got the truck it had a burned up ground cable anchored to the block on the passenger side. I made a new one and installed in the same location. Haven't had any issues so far.
One day I'll enjoy such luxuries like heat and AC. Daily driving an air-cooled vw and a hi-po engine sans heater boxes taught me a few tricks to keep things safe and comfortable.
Haven't had time to post much on any progress on the truck in a while. Mostly due to the fact I'm driving the wheels off of it. Had some fun in the snow this morning. Should probably think about putting the heater core back in at some point.....
Update.
Driving the wheels off the truck .. almost literally. Haven't had time to cobble up the steering stabilizer setup. Honestly the thing drives great without it. Odometer is reading 340,000+ now.
@Selahdoor . Sorry I haven't gotten a chance to get the paint codes figured out for you. I...
Powerball works well for finishing. Get a cotton buffer/rouge for heavier work.
If the wheels are oxidized that badly just polishing may not cut well/fast enough.
Wizards metal renew is great, as is mother's aluminum polish.
Get the oxidation off first and see what you have to work with.
Scored this nice Bilstein unit. Thoughts on using it as a steering stabilizer on the Dana 60 setup I have? Quick research shows dual stabilizer kits for the d60 not a single setup. o_O
@Selahdoor , sorry I have not yet.
Thanks for the reminder. I will ask my paint guy at work tomorrow if he has some codes for these obs trucks, if we can't find one I have access to a spectrometer and can match it up to any preferred vendor you may have.
Finally got around to doing a few...
Well, been a bit and time for an update. Thanks @saburai and @david85 . I got lucky with this buy big time.
I've put a good 2000 miles on it since getting it back in running order.
I have some leaky valve covers and turbo oil feed fittings to sort as well as a good leak at the turbo uppipe slip...
You do make a good point, and I agree that it's really up to how stringent the quality control is no matter the source of the product, and who will honor said warranty if something does happen.
I think @Thewespaul made a good point with buying local for easy exchanges if something were to have...
I did my tie rods with the napa proformer stuff due to cost. Quality seemed good and fit and finish was on par with Moog. But the boxes were labled made in China so we will see how long they hold up. Supposedly the napa chassis are made by Dana and worth the extra coin.
Had another interesting find this past week while doing the water pump swap on the truck. Someone really did love this truck before she burned up.
Noticed an out of place Schrader valve and nylon lined beneath the radiator. I don't know how I had missed it before but apparently to deal with the...
Thanks @saburai . Hope your rig is treating you well. Followed your thread on your recent acquisition.
Got around 100 miles on it and my waterpump started weeping yesterday. Noticed a squeal when I left work. So she's back down until this weekend. After sitting for nearly five years before it...
Well, another belated update, but a good one . Glad to say to say there is another IDI back on the road! All New tie rods and tightening up all the loose hardware solved the death wobble issue .
New tires are 265/75/16s Corsa all terrains from America's tire . Spray painted stocker wheels...
Hey everyone, now that I have most of the drive train sorted. I'm in need of basically an entire interior setup for my extended cab fire victim rescue. To put it simply I need everything Except the dash cover/HVAC setup/and front kick panels and sill plates, everything else has been torched or...
