I had a 7.3idi with ZF5, everything worked normal. Blew the 7.3 and installed a 6.9 idi. Ran that for maybe a year or so. Problem solved! Macrobb pointed me in the right direction. When I did that heim joint modification, I didn't take enough of the shaft off. It only took about an eighth of an inch of excess shaft, to engage the clutch enough to slip it. It never occurred to me that this was a problem because...- ConstantVigilance

Correct, it is, however, I already had the SMF conversion, so I ordered the kit without the flywheel. The old clutch and pressure plate were the same LUK parts. UPDATE: Problem solved. No more burned glow plugs... or excess smoke... or kinda-sorta-high EGT's. As it turns out, the cam gear was 180* off of the IP gear. Your right. No way to know for certain. I needed to swap on the 7.3 liter housing because I needed the breather port for my turbo set up.
