I had a similar issue with an 83 6.9 that sat for a lot of years. The factory oil pressure gauge was pegged until completely warmed up it would come down. Turned out to be the oil pressure relief valve in the oil cooler had stuck shut after so many years sitting. After pulling the oil cooler...
When I swapped my truck to 3G every thing was straight forward except on the 83 you have to wire the after glow relay power to the new alternator or else the glow plugs won't quit cycling. Now charges over 14v at idle

Thanks for all the feedback. I just thought it kinda odd at first but I forget how many applications these engine were in.

While cleaning the side of the block in preparation for when the oil cooler will go back on I noticed this hole plugged where the front header would go that I thought oil was supposed to flow through. It looks factory but I wanted to know for sure from those who know. Btw it's a 83 6.9
Just in case anyone is curious the measurements on the pressure regulating valve spring are
.04" thick wire
1.5" long
.42" wide

I took a box knife a slowly shaved away metal till I got the regulator out and it looks like the plunger is in there pretty good

Thnx shawn deere I like that method since I can keep the cooler in one piece. It wasn't leaking at the orings internally or externally ( although I might open it up and get measurements so I can try to find some new orings that will fit )but I want to check the pressure valve to see if it's...
Since I'm in no hurry to have the truck running Im going to attempt to pull of the headers and measure the small o-ring thickness and ID so that I can go about searching for replacements.

Ok so o I should be able to get the 2 o-ring kits to rebuild mine or use a two o-ring design cooler with these old headers I've searched info on the 6 ring coolers quite a bite on the topic but it doesn't talk about much besides the fact that you can't get the 3 o-rings anymore so all...
After installing a mechanical oil gauge on the 83 6.9 I have be working on getting roadworthy again I discovered that on cold startup the oil pressure is 100 psi+ that will slowly start to drop according to the Bosh mechanical gauge I'm using. Im the past few months I have had several oil...
Replaced filter about 2 months ago and when I pressed in the Schraeder valve before starting it today there was fuel right there

As of the past 4 days since getting bellow freezing my 83 6.9 has started hard starting. It will start right off (after the glow plugs go off)for about 4 seconds then die like there was air in the lines, even though I've eliminated the lift pump for a faucet duralift, but when it go to try to...
