    Another Mack Question!

Keith, where has the truck spent most of its life? I'm thinking as Gary is that there are some ground/hot resistance issues, maybe corrosion at connections or where grounds are bolted to the frame. Mike

    Another Mack Question!

The alternator should be very similar of the same as what is on Ag equipment. As far as the low idle it has to be controlled by the engine computer. He might have to have someone talk to it.

I am partial to Kenworth. The W900 or T800 are my favorites. There are a lot of Kenworth here and hold up really well. Peterbilt is another that is real good. Western Star has been gaining popularity here, they seem tobe prettygood. There are couple of companies that have Freightliners, I...

You're probably right about that. I haven't been around many Macks in the last 5 or so years. There aren't many up here, I'm not sure if there is even a dealer in the state nowadays. Years ago, Mack used to mount the steering gearbox directly on the front axle, subject to vibration & road...

They don't have syncro's on the sliding clutches, just hi-low range has a syncro. The lightning has a computer that controls the air that does range & splitter shifting. I'm not sure if he has the 'top 2' trans, it shifts automatically 9th to 10th & vice-versa all controlled by the computer...

Did they find the problem with the trans yet? What was it doing or not doing? I hope there is some one at that dealer that knows what they are doing, & don't just throw parts at it. Is it a Mack trans or a Fuller? One thing on air shift trannys, they need clean air at the right pressure to...

Also if he has a shop check one out have the engine oil filter cut open& look for metal. That is if it hasn't just had an oil change. If I were closer I would look at 'em with him. Let me know if I can give more advice. Mike

Does he have any friends that are mechanics that would go look with him? If he finds one, try to get a look at the maintenance records,& talk to the previous owner if possible. If he can't do that, then maybe have it looked over by a shop that he trusts. Run the engine, test drive, check...

I would be leary of anything that has less than the mileage that warranty covers unless you could get the history of it. A lot of fleets keep trucks until the warranty is up & then replace them. You can get some good deals on those. A friend of mine bought a Freightliner that way & it has been...

towcat stated if real well. Personally,I wouldn't have bought the Mack in the first place, lol. If it has all Mack components, you are a captive customer of Mack. If you have good dealer support that helps, but I like to have the option to get parts from someone other than the dealer. As towcat...

My new L8000 dumper, any suggestions?

I know Ford used engines from the farm tractor division for a while, I used a mechanics truck for Kiewit Pacific that had a tractor engine. The engine in timntools' rig sure looks like the tractor division engine.

My new L8000 dumper, any suggestions?

When did Cummins build the 7.8L? I have yet to see one. I would like to see a picture of it.

My new L8000 dumper, any suggestions?

That's not a Cummins. Ford did use engines from the farm tractor division in trucks in the '80's, until emission regs stopped that.

Looking for info on an 855 Cummins

As stated above, that the compression release for starting. The compression release was only on the small cam engines. That engine is pretty old, I would say made in the 1960's. It has the old eccentric adjust water pump. If you can get the serial number, either from the data plate by the front...

Can you buy a block heater?

The '05's had the heater in the block, just no cord except in certain states. It screws into the block at the right rear above the starter. The cord is available at your Ford dealer or Navistar dealer. If you get it from Navistar, tell them it's for a VT 365 engine[ Navistar's designation...

    Hard Starting in the Morning

Have they checked HPOP oil pressure while cranking? It sort of sounds to me like it's taking a while to build enough pressure to fire the injectors. I have an '06 & it takes about 4-5 seconds to light when it's cold. It's been that way since new. Only 5000 mi. on it, though. I wonder if...

    Hummmmm, New Brush Truck

Rampy, every diesel available now is going to have the particulate filter on it. Including medium & heavy trucks. I would think the tank installer could put a stack on & get the particulate filter from under the vehicle. I wonder how many fires are going to be started from the new rigs...

HELP! T444E POWERCHOKE 90psi Comp on three cyl.

Pics would be great. Are you going to have to change the wheel base on the other truck? If so I would roll the rear axle back to where it needs, to be & add to the frame at the end, rather than cutting the frame between the rear axle & cab & adding a piece. Back in 2000 I took IMT service bodies...

HELP! T444E POWERCHOKE 90psi Comp on three cyl.

How many miles/hours on it? Has it been using a lot of oil? A lot of blowby? If not using oil & not a lot of blowby, it could be valves leaking causing low compression. If so you could do a valve job. I would find out where the compression loss is-piston rings or valves & go from there. I would...

1976 Ford/ Great Eastern Fire truck trans problems

It sounds to me that one or more clutches failed. It's rebuild time!! I'd bet it's an Allison. The trans cooler will need to be replaced or thoroughly cleaned.
