Super duty 7.3 in obs truck

in fairness, if this is a correct statement Kraig, the problem occured after messing with the cups and injectors correct? If so, who knows if the engine would still be going strong. B10 life is 250k, B50 life is 350k for the 7.3 in a commercial application.... probably much higher in a pickup...

Super duty 7.3 in obs truck

turbo could stay (as long as it clears) just leave the wastegate control disconnected (you wont overboost). school bus should have AC which are single shot and larger size, so they should also work with the OBS PCM, although might need tuning for the larger size? AA - '94-'97, 90cc fuel (non...

Super duty 7.3 in obs truck

swap everything from the OBS over. Including the camshaft if you want the mechanical fuel pump to work. Sell off parts from the SD engine (what's left) to recoop some money.

    BILLOWING white smoke

confused over the 2 engines. Was this the engine for which this thread was started? It was running fine until the cups/injectors were "worked on" ? Something major went wrong to crack the cylinder.

    Extended Idle Time.....

SD trucks will hi-idle on their own depending on oil temp if the parking brake is set and in Park (if automatic) OBS trucks there is a blueprint on the internet to build a high idle circuit based off the throttle pedal assemby.

Ok going full Dr house on this *****

UVCH won't cause the engine to quit. It will run rough on 4 cylinders, possibly won't start but definitely wouldn't be an intermittent failure. You'd also have a CEL and a code tripped due to the IDM shutting down that bank of cylinders. BTW dorman is junk, go with OEM if possible.

    BILLOWING white smoke

This all started when the OP rebuilt the injectors/cups. OP said the truck was running great prior to that. I would highly advise against any "fix in a can", especially block/gasket sealer.

Disconnect the fuel bowl heater. It serves practically no purpose. As long as you treat your fuel in extreme cold you won't even miss it. Unplugging the heater is one of the first mods done to both my trucks. ZERO issues starting down to -20F without it (properly treated fuel, fully functioning...

PCM is losing power if the WTS comes on. fuel bowl heater still plugged in? ignition switch "loose"?

original IPR? nut tight against solenoid? pigtail intact? I had an IPR fail when the solenoid got hot, truck shut off. Never set a code.

    BILLOWING white smoke

Sounds like a logical step. Could be the cup or a blown head gasket due to the coolant/fuel whatever leaking into that cylinder, especially if you said it "hydrolocked". Hoping it's not something bent.

    BILLOWING white smoke

Odd. The blowby smoke looks bad, but it passes the up-side-down oil cap test since the cap stays in place IMO. Engine sounds healthy (listening on a computer) IMO. Problem started after "rebuilding" injectors if I recall, could be a problem with the rebuild. Disconnecting one at a time while...

    BILLOWING white smoke

Remove the valve covers, get it running. When it starts smoking like hell, disconnect each injector, one at a time, and see if the smoke dissipates. SInce the smoke smells like fuel and not coolant, it's possible an injector is stuck open or has failed.

good point. The newest version of these trucks are 18 years old. Wouldn't hurt to spray dexoit and clean both the harness and pins on both the PCM and IDM.

    Manual glow plug control

Side note, if you're glow plug relay quits, a quick fix to get the engine running is to jump the large terminals with the clamp from a set of jumper cables, which we all carry right?

    Manual glow plug control

Any 7.3 vintage (OBS or SD) can benefit from this mod by preventing unnecessary wear and tear, and battery drain.

    Manual glow plug control

It's all about cold start emissions. With my toggle switch installed on the relay ground wire (PCM) I am able to kill power to the glow plugs as soon as the engine fires. Saves tons of wear on the glow plug components and gives the neighbors a nice breath of that sweet cold start diesel smoke...

    Manual glow plug control

as long as you have the old style relay, and not a glow plug module, then you are correct in that you only have to run the relay ground wire controlled by the PCM to a switch in the cab. Break that connection and the relay won't close. You will get a soft code for relay control which shouldn't...

WTS light illuminating immediately after shutting off indicated the PCM has lost power for some reason even though the ignition key is still in the run position.
