    Gas 4x4 VS Diesel 4x4

You're welcome ;Sweet But lets be honest I know it was mostly LCAM's post, though in all fairness his knowledge on these trucks is hard to beat LOL

    Gas 4x4 VS Diesel 4x4

If the gas has the heavy duty package it "should" have the same D50 or 60 if its a 1 ton.

    OBS bumper differences F250/F350

On a side note, how do the black rubber strips attach to the bricknose and obs trucks? Mixture of bolts and adhesive or what? My 1990 needs it back on.

    zf5 tranny question

Yes I would. It had one in my parts book but it was kind of hard to go by when you don't know what you are looking at LOL. What do the 2wd ZF's do for parking brake?

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Yeah you're right, for some reason I was thinking of RacinnDrummin's type of builds; I don't know why I was only thinking of them.

    zf5 tranny question

What is actually different between the 2wd and 4wd s42's and 47's? Like is it just the fact that the main shaft is a different length and something is different with the parking brake or what?

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Oh yeah definitely not. The way I look at it is, if you have a modified turbo idi and you beat on it or tow with it, then an s42 or s47 on borrowed time. Yes it may last a while but eventually it will wear out so just be keeping funds for a rainy day when it finally goes to build it stronger...

    zf5 tranny question

You are correct, all F-Superduty's got the 4x4 transmission regardless if they are 2wd or 4wd. But I think for 1 ton and smaller trucks, you cant use a 4x4 transmission in a 2wd like you can the F-Superduty unless you pull the case apart and swap tail shafts. I am also not sure what they did...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

What were you meaning by this? Honestly just wanting to know. Are you saying that the S42 and S47 are that much different then each other or what? I would say they are different but not so much apples to oranges; maybe red apples to granny smith apples. LOL

    Cold Starting... Is this normal???

Mine gives off some smoke when it is really cold out but after it warms up it goes away completely even with reving and my truck runs perfect. I think its more just the exhaust being really cold and the moisture which is the same reason almost every vehicle out there shows exhaust smoke when...

    specs on this bolt

Whats it look like now? LOL I like the idea though, makes it very easy to notice leaks and see where they are coming from.

    Oog does a waterpump.

Yes. I don't know which one you installed but many have a nipple side to where you can hook up clear tubing to it and drain it out to a pan, bucket, etc.

    Bullnose/Slantnose Diesel Picture Thread

The most obvious difference is the wheel wells/arch being different, but seems like it is more common then I thought. Is it just really hard to find a Bullnose/Slantnose bed in good shape vs an OBS?

    ZF6

^This The only real thing you gain is shorter spacing between gears which can help some with towing, and the lower granny gear. ZF6 6th gear is almost exactly the same as 5th gear in a ZF5 so there is no major save there on the big end. Plus when you start getting that in depth and people...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

The 47 does have different gear ratio for the close set. Look at my link above. I guess it would just depend on if you want a more steep reverse and first gear or do you want to have the gear ratio set that is closer in the middle for towing and not dropping off as much with shifts. Obviously...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Also take a look at this. OP this might be able to tell you exactly what yours are. That looks like the holy grail of info to tell people what they have. If so, hell yes to me and "IM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE" (movie reference) LOL ;Really...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Apparently according to the great google you could get a diesel s5-42 in the wide/gas ratio if you wanted. Also supposidly the 47 could be had in the diesel close ratio of 5.08, wide gas 5.72, and also a 4.14 but I dont know what that distinction would be for. Were starting to geet above my pay...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Not from what I have read but I dont know for sure. According to my Ford book even the 2wd F-superduty got the S5-42 which is the 4x4 transmission. But the only distinction it shows between having the close ratio is if it came with the diesel motor wide ratio being with 7.5, 5.8, or 4.9...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

Well if it was me I wouldn't put the wide gas s5-42 in that truck unless I just didn't have a choice and needed it done or something even if the diesel 47 ends up being bad. Id still look for a close diesel s5-42 to put in it and would sell the wide gas s5-42 along with the bad diesel 47 in that...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

I edited my post to give you better numbers if you want to go look at it. Since you narrowed it down to being a diesel 4x4 then all those numbers should be correct. I know for certain all the S5-42's are because they are right out of the Ford book sitting next to me. The 47 numbers were taken...

US Gear Overdrive - Brand New - What to Do

This is true and good advice. Even my father who was in his 40's had a terrible time trying to type well and use computers in the best way. He graduated college and was not dumb by any means. I am obviously not old being born in 1990 but even me being almost 24 I still could work circles...

Which 5 speed would you choose?

    I was under the impression that the gas s42 is actually listed as "wide" and the diesel s42 is "close" Diesel: 1st: 4.14, 2nd: 2.37, 3rd: 1.42, 4th: 1.0, 5th: .77, Reverse: 3.79 Gas: 1st: 5.72, 2nd: 2.94, 3rd: 1.61, 4th: 1.0, 5th: .76, Reverse: 5.24 S47 Close Ratio (Diesel I assume being...

IDI vs OLDer gas F series for long run parts, fuel ?

I wouldn't call me your mechanic as there are some on here that know plenty more then I do, but I know I am not the first, nor second, nor third person that has mentioned something to you about constantly throwing those statements out in threads. Im in no way discrediting them or saying they are...

IDI vs OLDer gas F series for long run parts, fuel ?

Its not going to be easy especially without being somewhere with time and tools. Not to mention more then likely on a turbo idi, you are going to have "bigger" injectors, turned up IP if not an actual "bigger" IP, etc. Obviously being mechanical it isn't as simple as just loading in a new...

More power when running out of fuel

So I guess just the huge advance in the pump timing causes a sudden "surge" of power before it either A. gets fuel back and goes back to normal or B. you are actually basically out of gas and it will start to cut out and run horribly? I wouldn't think advancing the timing like that would...
