    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@franklin2 Mine has windows on both sides and in front of the overhang. Access door and windows on the side. Inside 4" insulated ceiling, walls, and floor. 230 gallons fresh water, 80 grey, 50 black. Cook stove and oven, sink, shower and toilet, hot cold water, 3 different heaters. 7.5' feet in...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@Thewespaul Checking if I'm understanding correctly: With the power off the FSS, the arm holds the inlet valve closed. With the power on, the inlet valve is allowed to open with the force of 4PSI from the lift pump? What should happen if the lift pump in activated with the top cover off the...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Ok. I went back outside and took a closer look. I did notice that the front and back edges of the top were not lined up perfectly with the bottom. But it could be slid back in line. 1/32"-1/64" or so, not much. But when it was just dropped back in, it was still slide forward a bit. So that must...

@Thewespaul Only have one fuel tank, a 50 gallon saddle tank. This truck believe it or not, with a 7.3, is rated for 40k. With air suspension on the rear. Update: The cover containing the solenoids has been pulled with the solenoids working as designed with no outward signs of defects. The...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Found this very excellent youtube video about 11 minutes classroom type discussion using a nice cutaway of what appears to be the Stanadyne DB2 injection pump. I'm getting very close to pulling the FSS cover. This video is valuable to anyone interested in how this works.

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Ouch! Well, it was a well written article but the thread it was mentioned in was about replacing the FSS, so I was misled by the thread. The article is printed out laying to the right on my desk as I type. The help he has given me has been tremendous. It's raining now but when it clears up I...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

I have some animations of a hydrostatic pumps somewhere. Sounds like those pumps may have been influenced by injector pumps, or vice versa. First time I watched them I thought it was the best invention since the differential. So that's gotta be how the injection pump works, at least sort of...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Well, I don't have a remote start setup and am working alone so will be hard to rotate the engine while looking at the innards. Are you talking about the solenoid plungers or plungers that deliver fuel to the cylinders? Is that how these IP's work? Do you have a picture of the stuff under the...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@Thewespaul. We crossed again. Great picture. I like to know what I'm supposed to see before hand when posible. Since I'm talking about trying to get some Seafoam in the cover, I'll be looking for the side inspection cover to fill the IP with Seafoam also. Parts house is 50 miles away and I'm...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@franklin2 Hey, thanks for the suggestion, but hearing it run on either might depress me even farther. I need to save what energy I've left to find the problem. @Thewespaul Well, I read the article by Wes. I thought it was to be about the innards of the pump but it turned out to be a basic...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

I found Mel's injector servicing article and will print it out for better review. I will have an air intake cover at hand to immediately cover the intake if the FSS is accessed. The FP is also on a separate switch but not sure how long that would take to kill the engine. I'll figure on being...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Ok. Got a solid jump from the pump wire to the front red/pink connection. The pump only held 3.5+ PSI with the extra current draw. Did not start. Reset the jumper to the large jump start cables. Pump held 4+PSI but did not start. The cracked injector connection had been completely opened and...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

We crossed. Thanks for the fuse schematic. Downloaded and saved. The fuse block on the Navistar 1600S is up behind the emergency brake structure attachments. That's on the left drivers side. Can't even read what each is for with a flash light. Very inaccessible. So the picture sure helps. Most...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

May be getting somewhere. Removed both the yellow wire (which also runs to the throttle solenoid) on the dash side of the IP and the red wire on the front. With the key on the yellow wire had the same 9.5+ volt it had before. With starter running it dropped to about 6.5 volts. The red wire...

Have test light. Had it jury rigged with wire to read/test from cab. Will do that again. I don't even know if there is a fuse box like in a pickup. Haven't found one.

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

I read somewhere that when the key was in the start position all circuits were deactivated except the starter and FSS. So I''m now wondering if there could be an entirely separate circuit for the FSS on start including a separate fuse. I'm thinking the key could not turn off the other circuits...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@Thewespaul Those two prongs were checked yesterday. First the connectors were pulled and checked for power with the key in the run position. Both checked at 9 volts+/-. (test setup was sloppy so may have lost some voltage in test) Then a hot wire from a battery source (the jump start...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@Thewespaul Loosened one fuel line connector at one injector a full two turns. Waited for the WTS light and cranked 10 seconds. Not a drop at the connection. Inspected the clear IP return line at the bottom barb connection for puddling there and saw none. There was a steady 4 PSI at the pipe...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

THAT is what my thick head needed to understand. So the FSS must just open a circuit to the cylinder delivery circuit. Since there is no smoke nor any hint of firing, FSS is suspected but will do the cracked line test to be for certain. Thanks a bunch!

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@Thewespaul No gel, it's 30F right now. Never gets cold enough here for gel. Brand new interstates same as U-haul had in it. Absolutely whirls the engine. Feels like I could drive on the battery. Ok got it. I do not know the innards of the IP so I get it that once the IP is spinning the...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

@franklin2 Yep. No start condition. Zero white smoke or any smoke out the tailpipe. I learned about the white/lean smoke a few years ago when the mechanical pump went out. Camping in the National Forrest at the time. That turned into a fun adventure. This is an 89 U-haul converted to a...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Ok, went to sleep thinking about this. I had in my head that there was a right bank return and left bank return with one out of the filter and one out of the IP. Now I see they are two independent returns. The one at the filter has just a jet or small opening that bleeds off excess fuel and...

    89 Navistar 7.3 idi----Learner Question

Should there be a fuel flow in the return line from the IP with the electronic fuel pump running and ignition switch at run position but engine not running? Thanks, Harold
