    Shaking at Idle

I'll try the fuel system cleaner when I run my tank down a bit. I did try cracking injectors but each one seemed to create more shaking. Either they're all doing something or I am not seeing the difference. Could air ingress cause issues like this? I haven't noticed any issues with cold...

    Glow Plugs Brand Rec

Not sure where you're at, but I was able to get mine through Autozone shipped next day for no extra charge. They were slightly more than Rockauto, but after RA added shipping it was a good bit less money, and at my door in less than 24 hours. Edit to add: they were Motorcraft glow plugs.

    Shaking at Idle

I’m guessing the motor mounts are original. Maybe they’re bad, but I don’t see any nasty rocking when I rev the engine. I know that’s not a foolproof test though. I probably should replace them regardless. Are they a royal pain to do? Thanks for the tip on the injectors. I work in an industrial...

Hood flew open while driving and now won’t close correctly

That sucks, sorry. I had bought a Ranger a few years ago and it was in pretty decent shape considering it was an 83 but had some dings and rust. The hood and driver door, however we’re perfectly straight. I had taken the hood off to pull the engine and laid it back on, latching the safety latch...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I got a tonneau cover for a super duty for cheap. I had to cut it down a couple inches and make some rails to account for the super duty bed taper. It’s far from perfect but it looks like it will work!

    Shaking at Idle

My truck has been shaking a bit at idle. With the hood open it doesn’t look like the engine moves much but I can feel it in the cab. Going up a little from the 750rpm it is set at for warm idle eliminates the shake. It’s smooth when driving regardless of engine or road speed. The little bit of...

    Door latch fix

I did move it out, even ground the hole a bit to get more but it didn’t work. I didn’t have to slam it to get it to shut, it just wouldn’t let go again. I haven’t messed with it in a while, just haven’t had time. I was figuring maybe the latch is worn and won’t open far enough for a properly...

    Door latch fix

I might have to try this out. I replaced the striker with a new one including a new plastic bushing and no matter what I did, the door would get stuck shut. I ended up using a bunch of wobble extensions, prayer, and cussing to loosen the bolt on the striker through the window slot and get the...

    LED Headlight Upgrade.....

Thank you for making that choice, I appreciate it! It makes a huge difference when the whole headlight system is designed and aimed properly. Back when I was young and dumb I lapped that stuff up, but now that I'm older and stunned for a bit by misadjusted or incorrect headlights I've changed...

    Hood to cowl seal

When I saw the water yesterday I had been driving for about 40 miles. I smelled antifreeze to popped the hood to check and that's when I saw the water. This morning there was no water after sitting all night in the rain; could road spray collect there while driving? The antifreeze was from...

    Hood to cowl seal

I will try to remember to snap a photo tomorrow morning before work. It is supposed to rain through the night.

    Hood to cowl seal

Is there a normal amount of water to collect on the air cleaner when sitting in the rain or should there be none at all? I saw a little bit today, first time it’s rained really since I got the thing last fall. I’ve read the hydro lock horror stories and don’t want that to happen to me.

How do y’all like to shift your ZF5’s?

The one I used had a gas V8 in it. I don’t know what transmission, it was a 5 speed of some sort. They had two automatics and the stick. Nobody ever wanted the stick, which was fine with me. I preferred it.

How do y’all like to shift your ZF5’s?

I usually just use one clutch press while shifting between any of the gears. I do the same while downshifting, getting the rpms close to where they need to be before trying to move into the lower gear. I start out in 1st if I'm dead stopped, 2nd if I'm rolling, and shift around 2k. A little...

    Intake Grunting Sound?

I had nightmares of it rolling someplace hidden under the valve cover, waiting for just the right moment to occupy the same space as something important. Interesting find with the brass wrench! For hazardous areas maybe? I’ve never seen a brass one but have seen Beryllium-Copper tools for...

    Intake Grunting Sound?

Thanks, that could be what it is. I will have to see how it changes with the cold advance and fast idle. I'm really hoping it's nothing. I just read all the horror stories and then wonder. Maybe automotive hypochondriac is more fitting for me? I lost a socket doing the valve covers. It popped...

    Intake Grunting Sound?

My engine has a bit of a tick, and I can hear kind of a smack type sound that seems to be coming from the drivers side somewhere. Depending on where I’m standing it goes from readily apparent to unbearable. After retarding my timing it was a bit more noticeable and I also thought I heard a bit...

    After years of idi ownership...

I set the timing back a bit today and now it’s at 9.5 degrees. It seems maybe a little bit less clackety, but this is my first IDI so I don’t have a great frame of reference. One thing I did notice is the engine braking is a lot more gentle. Shifting and everything just feels more refined. I...

    After years of idi ownership...

I used the hole that sticks out more. I thought that’s the 20 degree offset built into the meter. It was extremely tight and took quite a bit of careful jiggle-pushing to get the probe all the way in. I couldn’t think of a way to say that without it sounding inappropriate so there it is! Also I...

    After years of idi ownership...

Well I will throw my hat in here too. I bought one of these right after I got my truck last November, but then my Mom got pretty sick and ended up passing away in January so I hadn’t tried it out yet. Gave it a shot this evening and I can’t really say how accurate it is but it gives me a number...

    Cruise Control Question

Mine is like this too. If I drive my other truck for a while I get used to the higher sensitivity. There I just gently apply the brakes like normal and the cruise shuts off. If I do that in the F250 it doesn't shut off right away and the cruise actually starts compensating for the brake drag...

1994 7.3 NA Running Warmer than Normal?

I have a used one in right now. It passed a pressure test and was cheap. It will hopefully last a little while anyway.

1994 7.3 NA Running Warmer than Normal?

Just to follow up, the new thermostat fixed it. Under light load it slowly raises to 190 then drops to just above 180 and repeats. Today we had a killer wind and it stayed between 185 and 190 going into the wind 70+ mph.

1994 7.3 NA Running Warmer than Normal?

Well gfemling wins a prize and I have to eat crow. Pulled the thermostat to see how it looked and it’s broken just like his was. No idea what brand it was but a Motorcraft will go back in. Gfemling, If you ever find yourself in Grand Forks ND, I’ll buy you lunch!

1994 7.3 NA Running Warmer than Normal?

The radiator is indeed no good. Nearby there is one available from a 6.9 truck with an AT. Does anyone know if they have changed appreciably over the years? It sounds like it's the same outside dimensions as the one I had.
