    Can't Find DEXRON III/MERCON Anymore...Now What ???

My understanding is that the newer stuff is reverse-compatible, so grab whatever says 'Dexron' on the shelf...... Mike

    golden rod filter

Not to beat a dead horse, but just remember not to get sucked into the 'micron' game when it comes to filters. A micron rating means nothing without knowing: a) how efficient it is at that micron rating b) how they tested it c) what was the pressure differential when it finally met the...

    6.9 wont crank good batteries

So, are you saying it starts just fine if you jump the solenoid but won't even try to crank if you use the key? If so, perhaps it's an ignition switch issue. Just went through this myself. Mike

starting troubles, but not what you think......

Dude, you're the man! The new lock and tumbler was only a temp fix. Truck started acting up again yesterday and damn near left me stranded in the grocery store parking lot today. The Ben and Jerry's was just starting to melt when she finally rolled over. So, brought it home and tore into it...

    brand new alcoas!

Wow! They look awesome. But tell me more about this recall. And does 'star spoke' mean the ones that have cutouts for the tabs for the cap? Mike

    Frantz Bypass Oil Filter

Just remember, talking about micron ratings means nothing unless you also talk about the filter's efficiency at those micron ratings. Heck, a screen door is a .5micron filter; it's just not terribly efficient at it. LOL Mike

new wheels and tires. 285 75 16... Americas tire experience

Sorry to hear about your experience with them. I've used various Discount locations over the years and have always been happy with the customer service. Matter of fact, I just had them install my OBS Alcoas not too long ago. I asked them to be careful because, although they didn't look like...

champion replacement radiator, thickness compared to OEM?

To answer your question about thickness, I don't recall the Champion being all that much thinner than the stock unit. Maybe the American Eagle one would be, but if the tanks are the same (which is where the thickness really comes from), then probably not. Mike

champion replacement radiator, thickness compared to OEM?

Try again. It's my thread. I had moved the pics in my photobucket account and broke the links. Went back and fixed them. Merry Xmas! Mike

    Oil drain plug size

They're only as good as the data they're given to work with. I bought a plug for my truck for the first oil change and ran into the same dilemma. Ended up going with a Fumoto. Matter of fact, just did the first oil change with the Fumoto installed yesterday. Makes for an easy job, but with a...

    fuel additive for warm weather?

Checked my local O'Reilly today while picking up some other parts. Yep, they carry the Howes stuff, too. They had both the 8 oz Meaner Kleaner and the Diesel Treat in two different sizes, so I picked up both. I threw the entire 8oz Kleaner into the front tank before filling up tonight, so we'll...

starting troubles, but not what you think......

Well, since the parts store is closer to work than home and parts were cheap, I picked up both the ignition cylinder and the switch on the way home. Figured I'd start with the cylinder because the old one was kinda worn anyway. Used to be I could rotate it out of the lock position enough...

Where to add coolant temp gauge sender?

I'm using the same location on mine. Mine generally runs about 205°±5°F once it's completely warmed up. At first I was concerned that it was running hot, but icanfixall's post explains why my gauge shows it running a bit warmer than you'd think. Hottest I've seen yet is 230°F, and that was while...

starting troubles, but not what you think......

So, a while back I posted that I thought I needed a new neutral safety switch for the truck. See here: http://www.oilburners.net/forums/showthread.php?62904-Where-s-the-clutch-switch&highlight=switch But now I'm thinking that's not the problem. Admittedly, I haven't replaced the switch yet...

    fuel additive for warm weather?

So, given your suggestion to overdose, would you recommend splitting the 8oz bottle between the two tanks? I'm looking into ordering a case of this stuff to try it out. I've run PS Diesel Kleen (with cetane boost, silver bottle) quite religiously since I bought the truck over a year ago, but...

    Coolant

Read up on cavitation and SCAs before you make any decisions. Or just run Fleet Charge mixed 50/50 with distilled water. You can buy it at most auto part stores. As mentioned, it's a pink coolant. Mike

Shocks are less than a year old, so I would assume they're OK. I'll check the ball joints using the method described. Mike

    Suspension (chassis?) popping noises........ball joints?

I'm getting a lot of popping/creaking noises from the front end of the truck lately. They seem to correlate mostly with accel/decel rather than actual suspension travel. I mostly hear it when coming to a stop, but it probably makes it other times, too, but I can't hear it because of road noise...

    EGT Question

Also, while yours may be the older (non-Sidewinder) system, I would doubt very much they put the probe in the downpipe. Temps there would be way off and mostly useless. It's probably in the turbo pedestal/up-pipe like on the Sidewinder. See Page 4 of this PDF (#31 is the probe)...

    EGT Question

They made a non-wastegated Sidewinder. It's what I have on mine. This isn't to be confused with their older model, the one that uses the square air filter. 1000° is a safe max for sure, but depending on where your probe is, may be a bit of overkill. In the manifold, my guess would be...

    EGT Question

Quoted directly from the Banks Sidewinder Owner's Manual: "Your Banks Sidewinder turbocharged diesel engine should exhibit the following operating characteristics: Cruise Conditions (constant 60mph on Level Road): EGT should be approximately 400°F to 600°F; boost gauge, if so equipped, should...

    Where's the clutch switch?

Checked the fluid. It was full. I tried topping it off, but everything I put in came out when I put the little bladder back in. Found the switch, too. I was looking over near the clutch pedal itself. Didn't realize it was more towards the throttle. I don't want to bypass it at the moment, but...
