    What would you get?

I added a vacuum gauge and a voltage gauge. Advance warning of vacuum pump or alternator problems.

    gas station diesel

I have used Stanadyne Performance Formula for over 20 years.

    Best antifreeze?

Most diesel owners don't understand the need for routine coolant maintenance. In my view, cavitation is an old wives myth. Velocities in the cooling system are not high enough to cause true cavitation. What actually happens is that the true cause of corrosion of the block, oil cooler and older...

No Oil Pressure on 7.3 Idi

There are two 1/8 npt plugs in the main oil gallery, driver side, the rear one is often used for oil to the turbo if one is added (like my truck). the other is further forward on the same horizontal line from the rear one. Both plugs provide access to the main oil gallery which should be...

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

The C6 in my F 250 4 x 4 6.9 is coming up on 273,000 miles. I do run a Wix 51515 filter in the fluid cooling loop including a large auxiliary cooler in front of the condenser.

    6.9 IDI questions

When I bought my used F250 6.9 4x4 in early 1998, 143,000 miles, it did have a water separator on the driver side firewall that had been bypassed. I removed it and tossed it into the garbage. Banks turbo added at 205,000 miles, New engine at 223,000 miles. I change the fuel filter every 15,000...

    Looking at buying 6.9

With the engine warmed up and running, check for blow by at the oil filler with the cap off. Some mechanics put a rubber glove over the filler with the cap off, engine running to check this. Oil in the coolant at the radiator is a corrosion warning and a no sale. Wise diesel owners routinely...

Coolant temperature switch and coolant overheat switch fail at the same time?

The temperature gauge went way high on my '85 F250 4x4 couple of months ago. I checked actual engine temperature with my infrared thermometer - all fine. Replacing the instrument cluster voltage regulator solved the problem. And Dennis-Carpenter.com now has a solid state unit available for...

Oil pressure. Should I be worried?

This goes back to about 2012. The truck did not have a mechanical gauge until I put one on the tee with the sensor about that time. The factory sensor/ gauge combination is simply a guess for accuracy but the new location for the sensor at the main oil gallery raised the dash needle about 1/16...

Oil pressure. Should I be worried?

Besides being high in the oil pressure system, taking a pressure reading at the turbo will give lower results because the oil is flowing through the turbo and there are friction losses getting to the turbo. The best place is on the main oil gallery down low on the left side of the block. 6.9's...

    Banks or ATS turbo

My '85 F250 6.9 4 x 4 had a Banks kit put in in 2006. When the old engine went, the Banks kit was put on the new engine in 2007. Currently 54,000 miles on the Banks kit, 50,000 miles on the "new" engine and 272,000 on the truck. Still running strong.

Trans oil cooler and bypass questions for van

200 F is a good fluid operating temperature. If you are worried about fluid oxidation, you shouldn't be at that temperature. I do think that we should all be using full synthetic ATF which is much more resistant to oxidation than petroleum based fluids. Coming across the desert from CA to...

    She just... died....

When I bought my '85 F250 6.9 4 x 4 in 1998 the water separator was bypassed. I removed the old junk and simply change fuel filters every 15,000 miles. NO issues over 27 years but it is garaged every night.
  14. Jim993

How many of you guys are running a water separator?

The water separator was bypassed on my truck when I bought it in late 1998. I removed it. 130,000 miles and 28 years ago. Never a water problem. I change fuel filters every 15,000 miles, never water in the bottom of the old one.

Rebuild or replace motor? New project - 1985 F-250 4x4 6.9 with Banks, T19, and GVOD.

When my original 6.9 failed in 2007, I had a Jasper reman put in. The truck now has 270,000 miles on it but only 47,000 miles on the "new" engine. Runs great.

    6.9 Glow Plug System problems

I've had a momentary switch on the steering column for five years. Works great. Avoids having the controller go bad or the relay stick on and ruining the glow plugs. When I got the truck in December of '98 the water separator was bypassed so I removed it. No issues since and I change the fuel...

Vacuum and voltage. I also have boost, EGT and since mine has a C6, trans temp.

Anyone done a large aux c6 trans cooler?

I have had a tube and fin type on my '85 6.9 Banks turbo C6 for about 15 years, in front of the condenser. Mine measures 13" wide by 9" high. Coming across the desert in August through Needles at 108 degrees F outside and up several long grades into Arizona, transmission temperature got as high...

    C6 fluid change advice?

My '85 F250 4 x 4 C6 has 270,000 miles on it and is fine. I have used Red Line D4 full synthetic ATF since 1998 when I bought the truck at 140,000 miles. Not long after I added an external transmission fluid filter in the hot fluid line from the transmission to the radiator cooler AND a big...

Tips to: tighten/loosen through bolt solo?

I use Gorilla tape to tape a box end wrench on the side difficult to get to, usually up against something to keep it from turning, but most times Gorilla tape alone does the trick.

Thread locker orange vs blue for fan clutch

The reason the fan clutch is LEFT hand threads is so it won't come off. Any kind of thread locker will make removal MUCH more difficult the next time. My '85 Factory Service Manual (Engine)(6.9) says nothing about thread locker for re installation of the fan clutch assembly onto the water pump...

Anti Cavitation test strips and bottles where to get these days?

I've been using acustrips for over 20 years. I make them last at least three years by keeping them sealed in an airtight container, in another air tight container -- double sealed.

    R-134 accumulator?

My truck was converted from R12 to 134a in Spring 2020. Same condenser, new compressor (old was leaking) and new dryer. Works great. August 2020 we drove from CA to AZ, 109 degrees at Needles hauling 1000 pounds in the bed. We were and are cool in the truck..

    C6 no shift

PS in my view, every diesel should have a vacuum gauge in the cockpit.
  25. Jim993

    C6 no shift

Got vacuum? It won't shift normally if the belt driving the vacuum pump breaks, the vacuum pump dies, the vacuum adjusting valve up by the IP is defective, a vacuum line gets interrupted or the vacuum modulator on the transmission goes bad.
