    HP/Torque- When things start breaking...

Generally speaking, Components have an: A) “I can do this forever:)” happy spot; B) “I can only do this for so long...:bail” tolerance, and a C) “l quit:angel:!” As it applies to our IDI engines and old Ford trucks, What have you experienced/read/heard? Some of the IDI components I...

    Rocker arms- replace or keep?

Getting closer to putting my 7.3 together. A friend strongly recommended replacing the rocker arms “just because...” My used ones have 200k miles on them. But it seems I rarely hear of problems with IDI rockers (the new style). How often are rocker arms a problem? How do I check for wear “to...

From what I’ve heard the lube helps get more consistent torque.

    Head studs...

Here’s a pic of an ARP stud. The part number is on the box tab in the top right. ARP’s instructions included. Overall length 6-3/4”. Someone installed some that were a little longer (7”???- not sure) and they did interfere with the rocker assembly. They could be made to work (apparently), but...

    Allison 6 speed transmision?

Yes. As are the Allison’s, unless you go back to the old 4 or 5 speed non-OD models like the at545 or mt643/mt653. To clarify my question, 1) does the stuff exist to adapt the Ford 6R-140 controls to our engine? Or is a standalone controller available? 2) what about bell housing/physical...

    Allison 6 speed transmision?

And what about the 6-sp ford has behind the 6.7 PS? My understanding is that this is quite a bit tougher than the 1000 series Allison in stock form. Is there anything to physically mate it to the idi, and how would shifting be controlled?? :dunnoJust a thought...

    Allison 6 speed transmision?

yup, those are the D.O. ratios. There are a few slight variances, but basically this is it. The 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series ALL have at least 6 gears (a few have a super low granny 7th gear, like the md3070). Many have been electronically limited to 5 speeds, which is a function of the...

Using 2nd gear with E4OD while towing?

Please let us know his comments! These are “the rest of the story” details that can prevent the bad days. Or at least space them further apart.

Using 2nd gear with E4OD while towing?

I do wonder if Kevin and OldMisterBill aren’t at least partially correct about easing up while shifting. I was reading the specs on the Allison MD series trannies. The newer MD trannies with Shift Energy Management (SEM) get 10-20% more torque capacity than the identical setup without SEM. As...

    Pressure washing

“Know thy engine bay!” As you already know, pressure washing an engine can be done, but there are potential problems. BEFORE firing up the Pwasher, identify possible problem areas to avoid. If necessary cover them with heavy plastic and duct tape; this will only protect from overspray as the...

Getting by with one battery in summer?

Search “reconditioning dead car battery”. There are a number of approaches using inexpensive materials like Epsom salts. Apparently these methods can bring back a useless battery to ‘almost’ new.

6.9 vs 7.3 Head Gaskets and Boost

I just received a set of F3TZ-6051-A. NOS from eBay. They do look like OLD stock. The fire rings seem pressed onto the gasket, but loosely; no bond. I don’t know if that matters. The package wasn’t sealed, so I’m not even sure if these are the legit IDIT gaskets or not. The seller does have...

6.9 vs 7.3 Head Gaskets and Boost

As manufactured the gaskets have a “perimeter” material around all the coolant passages. Will the gasket be ok in direct contact with hot, pressurized coolant or will some type of sealant need to be applied around the cutout? I have the same feeling as frankenwrench— there’s some obvious answer...

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

There are a number of examples of air-air installs, so it definitely can be done. Air-water seems the best way to meet the objectives of minimal pressure drop and maximum heat removal. You do have to deal with two separate heat exchangers to get the job done, plus a pump. But each of those...

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

Thanks for the link ocnorb! Also a very informative write up. For some reason I couldn’t get the pics up, but prob something I’m doing wrong. Y’all are solidifying my inclination to go air-water. I’m glad to know it’s been done on our trucks with good results. I believe each of the previously...

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

I cheated- went to your profile page and found the threads you’ve started. Haven’t had time to get far into ‘em. Nice write up on “hx35 results”. From many things I’ve read Holset makes an excellent, responsive turbo. I’d love the range and output of the HE 351VE, but it’s huge and actuating...

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

Below is a link to Borg Warner’s Matchbot page. VERY informative and interesting tool! Highly recommended. Along with Wes’s thread on choosing turbos and Corky Bell’s book “Maximum Boost”, I had a lot of my misunderstandings clarified. Quoting from the MatchBot Intercooler efficiency estimator—...

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

I got a chance to read ocnorb’s and Shawn MacAnnany’s thread. And if I understand things correctly, asmith now owns Shawn’s CAC system. I did something similar to ocnorb and Shawn in testing the effectiveness of the CAC on the rig in my sig— a ‘95 IH 4900 with a dt466. I bought a bbq thermometer...

    Has anybody Bushed turbo con-rods

When you say “rod” here do you mean “piston”? I would want some VERY informed confirmation that the piston was essentially the same blank and would work fine with a turbo pin. And as Randy notes, the machine work would prob pay for new pistons anyway.

    Air-water CAC/intercooler on an IDI?

Thanks guys! It’ll be a day or two before I have time to really get into the threads, but this is just the kind of info I’ve been looking for. Question on your kit asmith- the frozen boost web site says your kit is rated for 700cfm. Is that enough? I thought we would need 900-1000cfm.

    Has anybody Bushed turbo con-rods

I thought it might go that way. I was under the impression some had done it, and could hopefully provide useful solutions. I’m still mildly surprised no one has put turbo rods in a 6.9. I suppose the head bolts/studs are the weak link anyway...
