Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Welp, it makes me feel better that I've not gotten as much progress done over the last few days and why I kept getting fatigued... Turns out I'm covid positive. :dunnoo_O All good here, 4 out of the 6 of us have it, and have been and will continue to quarantine. Hopeful to finish up Pete here...

Great tip! I bought flanged nuts, but not lock nuts. I'll throw some red on there, that would be a huge bummer to lose a brand new turbo to a loose nut! I'll take a look at the threads and see if I can tap bigger! I also have a sneaking suspicion the person before me helicoiled it. When the...

1990 7.3 idi stalling under load

When it dies, crank it and open the schrader valve on the fuel filter stack. If you're getting air out, fuel starvation supply is your problem. On Red Fred, I had this problem. The valve on my tank stuck shut and was creating a vacuum in the tank when fuel delivery was really flowing. Lower...

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Well, some days you're the Louisville slugger bat, some days you're the ball. I was the ball. Things just didn't go the way I wanted to. Couldn't get the fan clutch off easily, and after 8 bloody knuckles and no progress (stinking loctite! Why did I use so much?!?) I moved on to greener...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Yep! That's it. Glad it helped.

Ha! That's what I was afraid of. Anyone ever successfully drained and reused coolant? Any pro tips?

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Will I need to drain the coolant before pull the pump? I just dumped brand new fresh stuff in there, and I've get to successfully capture and reuse coolant. Would be a bummer to lose all that.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Not sure how much you can see, but as you said, it starts on the drivers side frame rail, under the engine, and up the passenger side crossmemer. Here you can see it from the front, and as well as from the underside. Here's the underside, it's the hardline that runs across the crossmember...

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

HE LIVES!! Got it to fire off! Woohooooooooooooo!!! Ok, now a question - The fan shaft (that's not the crank shaft, right? I haven't torn apart the lower end of an engine yet) looks to be wobbling. There's a chance it's a misfire that's causing a wobble of the whole engine. But I think my...

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Thanks everyone! I've been off work for two weeks, and my goal is to drive this one when I head back on Monday, so I've had a fire lit under me to get it done! Made good progress. Front clip all reinstalled, filled with oil, coolant, and reconnected all the wires. And then the "fun" began...

    Block heater thought?????

From what I have heard, there are three options. Option 1 is the factory block heater, and it works the best and heats up the most parts of the engine. However for my flatbed, being an early 84, it has a bad block in that area, so this one's not an option for me. Option two is to heat the oil...

    Srw flatbed

Ha! Well, you're too kind. That truck, Red Fred, has been quite the labor of love. And he's a 20 ft truck. Any closer and you see all KINDS of blemishes. Not to mention the steering that'll put you in a ditch, the brakes that have no assist, the clutch that sticks, the engine that misfires, the...

    Manual glow plug wiring help?

Yes! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. And I wouldn't have done the fuse, so I will make sure to include a fusible link in the main +12v onto the big lug. Thanks!!

    Srw flatbed

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but it's a srw wood flatbed with a steel frame. It's wide, like it was originally built for a drw. If you want I can take better pictures or dimensions if that'd be helpful.

    Manual glow plug wiring help?

Very helpful. I'll go this route. Should there be anything on the opposite "small" post? I think there were two red wires to that one.

    Manual glow plug wiring help?

Thanks for all the help guys! And thanks for the offer VA Mike! I might take you up on that if this one doesn't work out. I got it all together, wired most everything up and my fss and high idle all work. But I'm having issues with the glow plug relay. First off, the old one was dead (not...

Update soon. But first, Any idea what this is?? It's on the harness up by the temp sensor plug, and it wasn't connected when I pulled the harness.

    Project Queso

Totally get that! Delays are a huge bummer. Just when you start to get momentum...boom! Something else keeps you down. I mean... hypothetically of course. I've never personally experienced something like that, but I've heard it's a bummer. ;)

    Manual glow plug wiring help?

Good question. This is the 89 with the 7.3. The original harness that came in it is toast. Glow plug connectors literally crumbled in my hands, and wires that were cut and loomed in, dead ending. Best I can tell, I'm trying to combine a 6.9 and a 7.3 harness.

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Progress!! Probably the second most excited day, behind only the day he fires up. - I got the engine installed! Lots of wiggling, banging, wrenching, and pushing, we got it in! Woohoo!!!! I had a good buddy come over and we got the engine in within a couple hours. A few more hours later and...

    Manual glow plug wiring help?

Looking to wire up my engine, and I've got two hacked together home made systems. Oh my. So, I know the right answer is to buy Wes' system, but that cash won't be here for a bit longer. So, in the meantime, I want to hook up my own. I'm assuming the big two orange wires on the engine side...
