Got him all washed up and put new tires on (stole from Red Fred), getting ready for an alignment tomorrow. Looks good, if I do say so myself!
And here's a before and after.
Niiiiice! Snazzy bull you got there too! Yours is definitely straighter and cleaner than mine!!
Seeing that pump headed my way....I might have to change course. I'm building a 91 for a customer, and the pump WAS going into his. But man that looks nice. Might have to pick up a second and stuff...
Thanks for bringing it back up. Fred has been an awesome truck! To the point that I've sold all my other vehicles, Daily Driven Fred for a year, and now bought another IDI (Smokey Pete) to let Fred live out his days as a farm truck.
The journey has been a good one.
After I left off, the...
Just swung by to brag about maybe the best night working on my truck yet. Very little to do with what I was doing (installing enough lift for tire clearance, 2.5in) and everything to do with who I did it with.
Dreams are made of this stuff.
I mean it's definitely possible. I didn't pull the housing off, so it would have had to be misaligned by the previous diesel shop. Easy way to check?
Here's hoping! In person it almost sounds like an exhaust leak, going to make sure those are all tight tomorrow
I'll second the niceness of a push button full manual setup. Love the control, and I can glow a little longer on those cold mornings, or if it's not cranking quite fast enough.
One thing to look at, assuming everything else is good (and you seem very competent and thorough) is the starter. A...
@Thewespaul Can I ask a follow up here? I know it's from a year ago, but with my first gen banks I've got the same question as firstdiesel. After I finish tracking down that ticking and chugging noise (here) I will be looking at upgrading.
Because power.
I'm getting about 6psi currently, sealed...
Thanks all for your input!! Super helpful.
Yes, a pryro is on order and will be here tomorrow from Amazon. There's a Pyro in the truck currently, and I hoped it would work. Sure enough... No dice. So, $180 later and I've got one coming.
The steering is definitely sloppy, but after more...
My understanding is opposite of that. All the way clockwise is full up.
From these instructions to INCREASE fueling:
"After the Allen Nut in the injector pump shows up, use your 5/32″ Allen Wrench and turn the nut clockwise"
Man, when I went to archive my notes, I wrote out all that I did (that I could recall at least). When you write it all out, sure seems like a lot!
ENGINE
Pulled Engine:
-New heads
-Rebuilt Garrett Turbo
-ARP Head Studs
-New Headgasket
-Painted Ford Grey engine paint
-Painted manifolds with VHT...
LOL. too funny. It sure does make things easier though!! I see now why he does it.
Good to know about the Banks. That's a bummer, but understandable. Sure does pull a lot harder than my NA 6.9, that's for sure!!!
Would you say an upgraded IP and injectors from Wes, then, wouldn't help me...
Shakedown run complete!
Also, here's a walk around. How's it sound to you guys? Good? Bad? It's smoothed out a BIT, but still lumpy. Seem advanced too much? Not enough?
Got it warmed up (lots of oil burning off, freaked me out) and drove.
First thing I noticed was I forgot to put on the...
He Drove!!!!
I'll get a video of it tomorrow, it was dark and literally just up and down my road. But it drove!!
I'll back up.
I have two engines, and both had bad water pumps. The first one was wobbly because the donor engine was in a truck with a front end collision and warped the whole...
Not a lot of progress today. Sure am tired.
Being quarantined, I can't head into town to get the drain pan like I'd hoped. Did my best with a 5 gallon bucket, got most of it on the floor. Next time. The stuff that IS in the bucket, I'll use the coffee filter trick and reuse it.
And I'll most...
This looks like it goes on the Heater hose, not Radiator Hose, is that correct? (or is this unit just that massive that the scale looks off?). If so, is that how you bypass the "radiator is still closed" issue?
