    Fuel selector switch broken?

Just gonna throw this out there. I know "perfect" is different in everyone's eyes, but man if that word doesn't kill me! I've been trying to get my trucks "perfect" for quite some time, and like Bronco says, it's a rabbit hole that neeevvvveerrrr eeeennnndddddssssss. But what a glorious journey...

Help! Smokey Pete is too smokey. LOTS of white smoke

It doesn't seem like it. It was running great for the last 400 miles, no smoke hardly at all. Then all of a sudden a ton of smoke. Seems way too much to be suddenly huge cavitation. I mean, I guess anything's possible, but that one seems unlikely. (fingers crossed)

Help! Smokey Pete is too smokey. LOTS of white smoke

Great advice guys. I'll go home today and take a look. I, too, fear headgasket. The top radiator hose was rock hard this morning when I left, and I just had my wife check and it's lost it's pressure and much more pliable. Which means that pressure is going somewhere... eeek.

Help! Smokey Pete is too smokey. LOTS of white smoke

I need your help guys. Smokey Pete is blowing serious smoke. I fear the worst, but figure I'll check here first. Video below shows startup, then after high idle/advance kicks off (respectively). Here's what I know: -Lost my lower radiator hose on my drive into work Thursday. Got there and...

Why can't I adjust my timing while my engine is running?

while I've got you guys here, have you ever seen timing marks like this? I know they are just a starting point and and should be adjusted from there, but the top one looks like barely a scribe Mark comma there's a much more heavily indented mark off to the driver's side, about 9:00 position...

Why can't I adjust my timing while my engine is running?

Great to know! That makes sense, because the one guy I saw do it, had it turnbuckled over to the passenger side so he could adjust it while it was running. Don't know that I trust that enough to do it myself. Thanks for the explanation guys!

Why can't I adjust my timing while my engine is running?

Tried searching, but even using my best google-fu doesn't help me when my only words are "IDI timing not running". LOTS of old threads. Some fun, it's cool to see how far we've come since 1999. But no one ever says why, just that you shouldn't do it. How come?!

    The building of Beagle Pup.

Also, so long as the mods don't tell at you (or me for suggesting it) document it here! I'd love to watch it come together. Plus, it WAS an IDI, so it's totally relevant here.

    Somebody better buy this truck!

Did you guys see this??! Turns out "our" truck is getting national attention. Jalopnik: At $3,800, Would You Consider This 1987 Ford F-250 Diesel To Be Dually Noted?. https://jalopnik.com/at-3-800-would-you-consider-this-1987-ford-f-250-dies-1845876741

    Farewell

I can attest to that. I had one, it cavitated so I sold it. 5 years, 3 kids, and two homes later, I now got another. And another. And another.

    86 reg cab weight

Not sure the length. Last dump trip I got a weight, my 89 f250 4x4 with 7.3L, 5 speed, regular cab long bed with two full fuel tanks was 6600lb.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Here's hoping that's not sooner than later. The day they outlaw fuel engines will be a saaaaaaad saaaaaaad day.

    7.3 idit

With the 5 speed, and a turbo the IDI will handle that weight no problem. (just make sure it has a pyro gauge to monitor temps, either currently or add one for a less than 200 bucks.) Both seem like great deals, but that of course depends on condition. For those prices and those miles (not...

I have a black thumb but diesels are new to me...

I'd check a pick and pull, one of the beautiful things about these trucks is how plentiful the parts are. And injector lines like these aren't high performance or even one of the high wear items it seems. A used one should be just as good as any. One more thing to check before you buy one...

    7.3 Cold Starting

Hard to know. I think they range so significantly that there's not a consensus. The bad ones (Autolite) are all over the map, and catastrophic when they die. The good ones (motorcraft/Beru) seem to have longer life if manual since they don't cycle on once the engine is running. They also...

    7.3 Cold Starting

Full manual here. My guidelines are In warm weather but truck is cold (off for more than a few hours) I give it 8 seconds. Or, at least I count to 8. I don't have a calibrated counter in my head, but it always starts. Also, For what it's worth, even in 90 degrees, it takes the 8 seconds...

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Great to know! I did Ball Joints on Red Fred, and it went pretty well, albeit longer than I expected. But I've since learned pretty much just everything goes longer than I expect, so now I expect it. I also decided to send it back to the alignment shop to get it done. Ball Joints and wheel...

    CDR Plumbing and Winter Tips

This is the right advice. I'll only add that if you don't plan to see that cold, you can get by without the Patch heater down to a little below 0 without issue.

Project! Introducing Smokey Pete, the 1989 F250.

Well, alignment shop called, and said the wheel bearings and balljoints are toast. Bummer. Back under the knife he goes. Might get a RedHead steering gear box too while I'm in there. I checked out the column and the D coupler looks tight. With the engine off, twisting the shaft back and forth...

Formally Introducing... Red Fred the Rusty ol Flatbed

They are all rusted out. I go to Seattle and pick them up there. Done that 5 or 6 times now. Try are generally in way nicer condition, and usually cheaper since most people in the big city don't appreciate old iron so it keeps the supply high and cost low.
