That really doesn't "add-up" to me. A 5W40 sheering to a 30 weight is bad after 3000 - 5000 miles, but starting w/ a 10W30 (30 weight) weight is OK ??? BTW, I have seen UOA of 10W30's that have sheared to a 20W after 5k miles.
I agree that a 10W30 can be a good oil, but bottom line Ford...
Buy a scangauge or edge insight to monitor oil and coolant temps. Also. install a fuel pressure gauge.
You can avoid spending big bucks in repairs by watching these parameters.
Fuel pressure needs to ALWAYS be above 45 psig.
Oil temp should never be more than 15 degrees higher than the...
To each his own. I know plenty of folks pleased with theirs. Several Techs I know say that it is the best truck they have ever owned (as do I). You do need to take a few precautions, but it can be a great deal since so many people seem to quickly say they are junk.
As in anything - be...
Well that was an educated post from someone that doesn't appear to own one ..........
Seriously, the 6.0L CAN BE a great deal to buy used. You just have to be smart about it!
Here are a few threads to help pick out a good one.
BUYING A USED 6.0L...
Oil cooler, and tell your buddy to NOT buy it! Oil in the coolant can turn to pudding as the oil emuslifies in the water. This can restrict coolant flow in a lot of critical areas.
The updated spring is a highly recommended addition. It bumps you up to the low 60's at idle. WOT should be in the mid 50's.
Anything below 45 psig will reduce the life of your injectors.

The water pump impeller diameter has increased in size to 100 mm from 90 mm. Note: Both water pumps have the same bolt pattern, but a different sealing area. As a result, the smaller water pump has the physical ability to be installed into an updated front cover. If this is done, a...
Is the pump part# you mention for the '03 and early '04 model year or the later model years?
I assume it is for the early model years, but would appreciate it if you could confirm.

You can put a newer water pump (improved design) on your 2003 engine if you purchase and install...
This is a uninformed perspective. I would bet your cousin had all kinds of mods. The first clue is the tranny. the Torqshift is a fantastic tranny. If the owner trashed his, it was w/ a tuner and poorly written tunes. Same thing w/ the turbo.
Get the truck w/ the least amount of repair...
STC - snap-to-connect fitting and it is on the discharge of the high pressure oil pump. The design was changed to include this fitting in 2005. It has proven to be a weak point.
This is a lot more likely than a head gasket leak getting coolant into the oil, but even then it isn't a typical failure, and usually you hear about it hydrolocking more than you do dumping cooant into the oil (and you will know that you have a problem w/ the white smoke that smells like coolant).
The service manual discusses electronics under the hood that controls the engagement of the transfer case (motor on the side of the transfer case). Check the two relays by the drivers side battery . There in a small box 1.5"x3". They are for the shift motor. You can spray some contact cleaner...
Just an FYI - the 6.0L is often times hard to troubleshoot. You have already tried (apparently) randomly changing parts to resolve fuel economy and hard starts. How do you know it is injectors or do you not want any help in troubleshooting? Many folks have had good luck w/ a product called...
Is your fuel pressure regulator spring weak? If so, it can/will cause low fuel pressure (under 45 psig) and damage injectors. An updated regulator kit includes a new spring and is cheap.
HEUI, no common rail.
As I said, I agree w/ the injector probability.
One check:
Remove the ficm relay and disconnect the fuel pump by either pulling fuse or disconnecting pump. remove secondary fuel filter try to make sure its full then have someone crank it while looking for bubbles in...
