I would forget about the tests if your blowing white steam out the exhaust. That’s enough of an indicator to know somethings wrong.
You need to get it fixed and you won’t know exactly what’s going on until you tear into the engine.
Plan on a bill of at least 3k to have a shop do it. That will...
The injector pintles/nozzles wear out. That’s why nobody here on OB recommends buying rebuilt injectors & IP’s from a cheap injection shop, including myself. Been there done that. Why replace worn out components with rebuilt crap has been the consensus on here.
Afraid that’s your problem. You need new injectors, not “cleaned” ones. They only last about 125k at the max. So these aren’t new injectors. Im guessing the IP isn’t new either?
Your engine might be running a little hotter with a new IP & injectors, especially if the old setup was worn. Probably normal.
I would look into your cooling system. Radiator, OEM thermostat, & water pump. If your running the original stock radiator, that might explain it. They don’t typically...
Either way, this sounds like an injection pump problem. Stanadyne injectors are damn good, but pairing an old worn out IP with new sticks will cause problems, including power loss & mpg issues. I would put a new IP on it and play with the timing.
These engines tend to run the best around 7-9...
Should have taken pics. Both heads (first set) were riddled with cracks.
My second set of heads was even worse when I had baby moose on n/a engine (running regular diesel fuel). I cooked that engine in about 200 miles lol. Cracks were in between valves, all around valve seats, and past fire...
Sounds like something in the valve body might be sticking.
I would go buy a couple bottles of Trans X (blue bottle) and see if that helps. Did for me when I had that POS 4L60E in a previous truck that I no longer own. I had the same symptoms your having.
I had a triple filter setup. I think it was something like 5 micron or something like that. Hard to remember it was a while ago. Centrifuging is the way to go, but doesn’t change the fact that WMO runs really hot. WMO typically has a 10-30% increase in btu’s compared to #2 diesel.
Running 100% veggie oil will almost require an in line fuel heater. I would say this is the best form of alternative fuel as well.
Running anything other than diesel fuel should always be centrifuged.
I ran WATF for years when I was a broke college student. Had a pretty good filtration system...
Tire beads are great for large off-road tires, as they naturally don’t balance very well.
Aside from that, if you need them on regular tires, you either got really cheap Chinese-made rubbers or your shop doesn’t know how to balance them correctly. If they were that practical & worth it, all...
If you don’t have an air intrusion, I would look closely at the injection pump. I’ve heard of people having problems with those injectors as well.
You could try installing a new fuel filter filled with sea foam. If that doesn’t clear it up, I would plan on doing a return if it’s still under...
I would say the biggest choker that is currently on that engine would be the downpipe. Go with a banks dp like towcat mentioned and it’ll really wake up that truck.
If injectors & IP are original, call Mel (Conestoga Diesel) for a baby moose & new injectors and you’ll really have a strong...
An E40D will never be a bulletproof transmission unless it is rebuilt & heavily modified (about 5-8k) to handle the astronomical horsepower and torque power that these idi engines make LOL. Pretty sad when one blows up because it can’t handle the 185hp that’s in front of it.
