    Cam to Crank Gear tolerances

IH manual gives 0.0015 - 0.013" backlash, so you're within spec. Never measured one myself. That does seem more than I'd really expect, though I don't see any reason to be too concerned. Maybe try a different gear if you have one and see what that one is at?

    4wd DNE2 Project

Was going to rebuilt the 1356, but when I took it apart to change the shaft the internal bits looked in like new condition, so I'm thinking I may just use it as is. Still have to really clean and verify everything though to make that final decision. I am for sure doing the oil pump mod. Got...

    4wd DNE2 Project

Slowly making progress... Splice weld was fun, 1st time I've used the full power range (190-~500A) on the welder. 270A just wasn't cutting it. Nice to have more power than you know what to do with sometimes. :sly This project convinced me to finally get a water cooled tig torch. My air...

    6.9idi to 7.3 powerstroke swap

The price for the PSD is right, although that makes me wonder what's wrong with it. Given the age and being an ambulance (running 8+ hrs a day) I'd expect that motor is tired if not completely shot. At the very least I would do a very detailed inspection of the engine before messing with it -...

    Champion radiators SUCK!!!!

Do not agree. Electrolysis requires dissimilar metals - these radiators are all aluminum. On a brass/copper unit possibly, but not on this type. I suspect this is a crack from stress caused by the side bracket connection to the tank, possibly a welding/assembly issue.

7.3 IDI Rocker Arms removal and instillation

Hate to break it to you, but I would be looking at a new set of rockers. If they were rusted that badly the wear surfaces are almost certainly damaged, and even if you cleaned the rust up there's still damage to the surface that will cause abnormal wear. Probably not critical, but I would plan...

    Champion radiators SUCK!!!!

I've had no issues with mine so far, got several years and ~30k on it. I agree with trying to warranty this one and get another. I would not use a plastic tank - these are used because they're cheap and light and they are *not* nearly as durable as a copper/brass or all aluminum type...

    Adding ABS Sensor to D44HD

Well, you're right, the later cruise works just fine wired directly off the t-case sensor. Nice to know, makes it an easier swap for folks. Wish I'd have known when I was going in circles trying to fix a bad connection on the PSOM I had in there.... oh well.

    6.9/7.3 interchangeable parts?

Only the earlier 6.9 used the press in oil jets, later ones are bolt in same as the 7.3. IIRC the break is around sn 179,000 (~Jan 85)

7.3 IDI Rocker Arms removal and instillation

I would try to put them back in the same place w/ same pushrod in the same way. IMHO not a big deal if you don't, but always a wise thing to do if you can. None of the pushrods I've personally seen had a copper ball or any end mark, however the IH manual does say copper end up due to the use...

    Banks non wastegated turbo question....

Flange is a standard T3, so most other turbos will fit on the inlet side, though the oil drain, downpipe & compressor piping may not fit. Are you sure the turbo is correct for that truck? The early banks units were different between manual & auto, and may have differences in years as well...

    electrifying engine block while painting?

I think you need a pretty high voltage - 10kv maybe? You also need to set it up so that the paint drops are charged as they leave the sprayer. Just hooking a 12v battery up isn't going to do anything for the paint.

    LIFT!

Just add an inch or so of lead in the bottom of the truck box. Instant leveling kit. :rotflmao

    Oil temp gauge

Hey, i'd rather have too many than not enough..... ;p Think the plan was one on each side for a future crankcase vent oil separator drain, one for the oil temp sensor, one for a different oil temp sensor (primary one for the gauge second was to be feed an electronic alarm system), one maybe...

    Oil temp gauge

Ya know, I don't remember. Right about here.... LOL Looks like about 3" above the bottom of the sump. IDK, made sense to me at the time. Had issues with cracking the first time, I think because of how I welded it but it worked out with the 2nd set. One thing that turned out to be a pain is...

    Oil temp gauge

I have a temp sensor in the side of the pan. I think it's a very wise thing to have, especially since these engines are oil cooled to a large degree. It also serves as a backup temp sensor should the coolant temp system go haywire. Putting a sensor in one of the pressure ports would work...

    h1c or hx35 turbo swap

I would go wastegate myself, you get more low end and can adjust/regulate max boost. Some say that non wg flows better, hence is better for towing and has lower egts, but I personally do not agree and wind the wg to work fine for me. Also be aware that the general consensus is that ~10psi is...

    h1c or hx35 turbo swap

HX35 should be fine unless you're trying to make stupid boost. Setup I have works well for me, and will happily hit 20 psi which dovetails well with the fueling of the bull moose pump I have. Rated flow on the HX35 is 52-54 lb for the 8 blade (earlier) and 58-60 for the 7 blade (later...

    Marker Lights Stay On

Looking at the wiring diagram I have, it does not seem likely that it's a relay issue at least not as LCAM mentioned - the relay switches the marker lights, but the cab top lights and dash lights are run off the switch, not the relay. If the relay was stuck on, these would not be on, only the...

    Let's talk Overdrives vs Gears

You probably have a 4.14, IIRC most diesels had that and it's the gasser trannies that have the 5.72. Should say clearly on the id plate on the driver's side of the trans though if you want to look.

    Let's talk Overdrives vs Gears

I'd run the DNE/US Gear, but you'll need a 4wd unit - is the one you're looking at off a 2wd or 4wd? The 4wd unit sat between the t-case & trans and has a different housing & output shaft - not like a GV where both 4 & 2wd sit behind the trans/t-case and are essentially the same box with...

What do your gauge setups look like?

My plan was to use it more for a combined warning system and a control for the fan clutch and intercooler pump, with some display functions for things that i might be interested in occasionally like rear end temp. Seems like it should be that difficult to do with some basic electronics...

    4wd DNE2 Project

Yep, slides right in. Planning to use studs, but even then you still need some clearance to get nuts & washers on, and there's the potential for interference between the 2 sets. However, it looks like the fixed yoke shaft will give sufficient room for this not to a problem while minimizing...

    4wd DNE2 Project

Found a fixed yoke 1356 shaft and it looks like it will work nicely - saves about 3" of length which isn't much overall but anything is nice. Still leaves enough distance between the flanges to weld them onto the pipe and put bolts in which is good - I was worried it would put the cases so close...

What do your gauge setups look like?

Well, I think it was originally Tim's (TheWarden) idea, I just finally got around to doing it. Wound up where the only gauge that actually did anything in the original cluster was the tach, so I figured I may as well just chuck it and see what I could do with the space. Pretty sure I did...
