    4wd DNE2 Project

Progress report - had this thing in service since about may and it's been working well. Used the mount setup above behind the 1356. Had to shorten the rear driveline and use a hybrid front u-joint. The USG/DNE uses a GM style 1350 yoke, so you need the GM straps and bolts and a 1350/1330...

    Help dianosing engine rattle

Mine as near as I can tell turned out to be previous overheating damage. The engine has overheated not long after being rebuild due to a leak from the block heater screw falling out. At the time there didn't seem to be any problems or damage after fixing the leak so I had more or less forgotten...

    Defective LUK Throwout Bearing

Finally got back to update this... Turns out it wasn't the throw out bearing at all, go figure. When I pulled it apart the 'nose' section of the trans that the throwout bearing rides on was broken off from it's mounting flange and just flopping around on the input shaft. Fairly clean...

    Fixed fan conversion for IDI

Yes, I have an electric full lock up clutch. I love it. Mine is actually not a Horton, it's some German company. It actually works a 2 speed setup using a set of permanent magnets to provide a small amount of drag for a low speed and then a full lock up via an electromagnet. Basically the same...

    Gauge install advice needed.

It's a turbo, go into the bottom of the uppipe or turbo bracket where you can easily get to the bottom of the pipe. The short distance between exhaust and pipe woln't make that much difference and you'll see a more average flow.

    Gauge install advice needed.

The further back you go the more flow you'll get and more representative average you'll see. Right at the front you only see the front cylinder's exhaust, so if that one is higher or lower than the rest you'll get an inaccurate measurement of the overall average. The optimal thing would be to...

    extra cooling?

Yes and no. A typical 18 wheeler at 80k has 46k on the truck and 34k on the trailer axles, so the truck still has the majority of the weight. Pulling doubles is a bit different true; 32k on the truck & 48k on the trailer. Still comparatrively much more weight on the truck than your rig with 10k...

    extra cooling?

So why not just get a truck that's already built that way? Or at least start with a heavier rig. An F-450 (F-Superduty) would work well, and already have 4 wheel disc brakes and a heavy duty rear axle. CHP may go off axle and tire ratings, but if you ever get in a wreck I bet the lawyers are...

    extra cooling?

Up until the trailer brakes fail unexpectedly..... Yes, it happens. Not long ago several people (can't recall for sure, think it was a family of 4) were killed when someone was hauling ~20-25k behind a pickup and had his trailer brakes fail going downhill. S*** happens - do you want to be the...

    extra cooling?

Adding an electric fan as a supplement to the mechanical woln't really do anything if your mechanical fan is working properly. If there's an overheating problem because the fan clutch is kaput, a small fan on the front is not going to be enough to take it's place, and if it's working correctly...

adding an oil cooler to my IDI, questions.

So thinking about this over the weekend (lots of time driving) I think that the best approach for an add on oil cooler is to use a separate cooling circuit completely - use a heat exchanger of some sort to transfer heat from the oil to a separate coolant circuit which then dump heat in it's own...

    extra cooling?

    1) Put a real temp gauge on it 2) Electric fan woln't do jack. Some aftermarket fan clutches don't fully engage until quite hot, may just be this. Unfortunately hard to tell. I hate viscous fan clutches for exactly this reason. I have an electric clutch on mine and love it, but it's not an...

    rebuild kit

Rebuilt kits are easy to find, personally would go aftermarket, not Motorcraft. I'd figure around $1200. Machine work is the expensive part. Most likely have to bore the block, possibly crank grinding, head work, etc. Probably $1k-1500. Some stuff you could do yourself if your shop has the...

    1992 IDI Gen1 Banks turbo replacement/swap Holset

Rebuild the existing turbo and fix any other problems. I have an HX35W and love it, but I also have the motor modified to take higher boost and have a custom uppipe setup - I think the physical size of the HX35 would cause problems using a standard turbo up-pipe/mount. H1C may be the same. HX35...

adding an oil cooler to my IDI, questions.

I'm not sure on the can't hurt - oil that runs too cold can be just as bad as too hot. I find that the sump temps run 10-20* below coolant except for extended high load running, so depending on how you do an external cooler you might make it where the oil never gets up to a good temperature...

adding an oil cooler to my IDI, questions.

Do you need one? I have the stock idi oil cooler (not even turbo cooler) with 20 psi boost and I never see oil sump temps more than about 10* above coolant temp even pulling heavy on long hills in 100* outside temps. I have a dislike of external coolers because you have added a bunch of...

Barn Find! - Liquid Cooled ATS Turbo

Whistle + low boost sounds like a boost leak to me. Doesn't take much. I'd try to pressurize the intake somehow. A smoke machine would be the best, but hard to get one.

    resusing intake gasket?

I've done it, worked fine. Best bet would be a new one, but as long as the gasket material isn't damaged at all you should be fine. I would only do it around the coolant ports in the heads and wouldn't worry about the intake ports or maybe just a light coat.

    Defective LUK Throwout Bearing

Is the LUK bearing the same as the regular 7.3 idi stuff? I know the clutch is special for the SM setup, wouldn't think the TO would be too but curious if anyone knows for sure. Any suggestions on where to get a better one? May just stick the old clutch back in - at least that one worked...

    Banks Sidewinder wastegated rebuild?

Hx35 is the same inlet flange and down pipe could probably be adapted without too much work. I think the compressor housing would have clearance issues though.

    Pulling motor on 6.9

Well, a forklift or crane is a good start.... Nothing too critical, pull radiator, fan, trans, exhaust, wiring, etc etc, and lift out. It's something like 1200 lb though, so that's generally the biggest issue. Regular engine hoist can't really get the lift/weight capacity to do it. I've...

    Defective LUK Throwout Bearing

Anyone have issue with a LUK SM clutch having a bad throwout bearing? I pulled the truck down last month to replace a bad ring gear and decided it would be wise to do the clutch at the same time even though the old one only had ~50k on it. New one seems to have a bad throwout - as soon as...
