    4wd DNE2 Project

Not sure you even need an extra crossmember, just something to help support it some. I had a spring setup but it wasn't well engineered. Right now it's got a couple of 1" ratchet straps supporting the DNE box. I also replaced the t-case to trans bolts with studs but one of these days I need to...

    Seattle Area IDI mechanic needed

I can't do much with the trans, but might be able to help with other stuff. I'm on the other side of the sound though.

    US Gear Surprise

That switch is not, per original design a fail safe. It is the control switch for the motor. The shift switch put +12 to one or the other of the motor leads (3 lead motor) and this is hot for as long as the switch is in that position. (ie, one or the other wire is hot anytime the ignition is...

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

Yep, forgot about the newer ones, sorry. So if it has internal wires from the motor to screw terminals on the side case cover it's a 3 wire grounded case motor, if it's got external terminals on the back of the motor case it's a non grounded motor.

The motor does ground through the case. It does have 2 leads, but internally it's wired with 2 coils both with a common ground. Those are the hot legs of the 2 different windings. Instead of reversing by flipping lead polarity like a common motor these use 2 separate windings for fwd/rev. I am...

    Re ring in frame?

Technically you could, but it would be a huge pain in the rear, and the quality of the end result could be questionable. As mentioned, possible but difficult to remove heads and oil pan in the truck, and then from there access to get to the bearing caps and drive the pistons out would be painful...

    Intercooler pipe routing options (pics)

Thanks. Bit of cobbled together mess and apparently the pics I have on the computer suck - have to get some better ones. I did some fab work on the intake and eliminated the snail entirely - one fewer thing to mess with and gained some turbo clearance. Don't seem to have on of the final product...

    Turbo blankets?

Not going to warp the housing. On the flip side, I doubt it makes enough difference to be worth the cost.

    Dual fuel gauges?

Up until you went on any sort of grade.... With tanks that far apart it wouldn't take much of any angle to have enough level differential that you could pull air and/or overfill a tank. Beyond that, you've got the issue of going past the axle. Not a great idea.

gear vendor, doug nash overdrive units.

About the only way you're stuck right there with the US Gear box is if you destroy the unit, and that's equally a problem with the GV - ref Calvin's post. You can have a electrical issue and not be able to shift, and maybe if you're really unlucky somehow get it stuck in neutral though that...

    Dual fuel gauges?

Most aftermarket systems are 33-240 ohm; gauges and sensors are easy to find. Isspro I know has them. I took the stock sensor apart and used the stock float and arm connected to a universal sensor bolted to the backing plate for the stock sensor. Somewhat of a bodged setup, but cheap and easy...

    no fire 6.9 idi

Are you getting white smoke? If it's injecting fuel you should get visible smoke out the exhaust. Unless it's cranking super slow it should fire with starting fluid if you're actually getting fuel. If there's no white smoke out the tailpipe and it's cranking at a decent speed you have an...

    Engine Preluber

Bigger questions is if it's needed - what do you gain? Unless it's been sitting for a while, there should be a retained oil film in the bearings, some oil in galleries, etc, so it's not 100% dry. Further, how often do the bearings wear out? It seems to me that end of life due to bearing wear is...

gear vendor, doug nash overdrive units.

GV and Doug Nash/US Gear are 2 very different units. GV is still in production, DNE2/USG isn't. Used units are roughly similar in price from what I've seen - $1k+/- Very different design. GV is a hydraulically shifted planetary unit similar to an automatic trans in operation and design. It is...

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

Though thinking about it now, I don't think there's any technical reason use and underdrive box backward for an overdrive. You'd need to mount it as a divorced case using the output yoke for an input with a short driveshaft to the trans, and then fabricate some sort of adapter to mate the rear...

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

Correct. The input is the same flange and female shaft as a transfer case and the output has a regular driveline yoke.

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

The difference between UD & OD is in the gears. The housing, shift mechanism, etc is the same. The only way to convert one to another would be to swap the entire gearset, which means finding a good set of OD gears. These are helical and the input/output gears and integral with the respective...

    Freeze plug tools available.

Nice work. CNC or hand machining? I did something similiar when I made one a few years back but it was less pretty. For the rest of the folks out there, the price is a bit painful, but when you look at the time involved to make them it's reasonable.

    Hx35 idi

Interesting to see someone try it with a stock setup. I had wondered if it was possible. Mine is a custom up/down pipe setup more because that's what I had already built than to fit a big turbo but it does work well. HX35 is a nice match to these engine to me. I am very happy with it. I left...

    Stolen IDI

That's my though too, but apparently these older trucks are popular with the tweakers in the area to use to get to their illegal grow patches. With the price of diesel pickups these days I'd say it's worth $2500-3500 for the average truck guy, maybe closer to 5k for someone who knows idis...

    Stolen IDI

Thanks! I'm confident that when and if it shows up somewhere it'll get noticed. Question is when/where and in what condition. Good news is even if it's wrecked there's still lots of useful stuff I can get off it. The truck being stolen I can deal with, it's mainly all the little things that...

two questions out there for the IDI owners

IMHO no reason to mess with prechambers. Unless I'm missing something they're trouble free as is unless something catastrophic happens. Yes, they'l crack, but the cracks don't matter unless they penetrate the fire ring. Increasing CR through increasing prechamber size is an interesting idea...
