As far as I'm aware the piston rings are the same between the idi and idit. Someone with more knowledge than myself might correct me but I'm pretty sure only the wrist pin (and related parts) are different

Physically it is possible however it will not be good for the axle. The yolk isn't long enough to keep preload on the bearing and will eventually cause the pinion to fall into the pumpkin damaging everything in the internals. This is why I had to rebuild the 10.25 in my jeep

Checking battery voltage without any load wont tell you much about battery condition. The best way to test them is to check voltage under heavy load and with each battery isolated from the other.

Check for pin holes on the pickup tube. Also if the rubber is cracked or loose then air can be sucked between the tube and hose

There is a shower head looking pickup on the pickup tube that commonly breaks off/ falls off inside the tank which can cause symptoms of no fuel while there is still fuel in the tanks

The zf5 uses atf so the oil should be red
If there is grey, that would be metal and the oil should be drained and replaced if possible

You can lock the hubs then crawl under the truck with the transfer case in 2wd and spin the front driveline by hand and see where the slack in the system is

Cuffing out the exhaust usually indicates a bent exhaust valve or some other issue bleeding compression out the exhaust
