Currently have a mandrel bent crossover from CDD curing in the BBQ!
Wife's out of town, but it won't fit in the oven...
Using DEI HI-Temp coating... 2 more coats to go.
Cheers!
For the Y-pipe I was a little better prepared. I've done a few jobs welding cast over the years. So I broke out some Jupiter Rod left over from an old job and buttered the top before attaching a V-band flange. Here it sits after a full night of being buried in the sand (After full pre-heat and...
This was a learning experience for me. I've welded lots of materials, but never stainless that required a back-purge. Bought some materials and set up my argon regulator with a second outlet to feed the purge hose. Don't laugh too hard. This was my first ever attempt; if it fails I will build...
It would seem that someone could "build up" the collector with "cast friendly" weld.
Of course, I thought of that AFTER going all in and building a new up-pipe!
I wonder if the pinched oem downpipe plays into this by adding backpressure on the joint.
I’m going to build a new up-pipe. Installed head studs yesterday. That was fun.
Me too man. Me too.
Good news is that it doesn’t make pulling it apart a pain. Y-Pipe dropped right out with a little twist.
Time to get serious with the up-pipe and the down-pipe!
This is ridiculous:
Pinched off.
Well bad news guys.
We took the truck out last weekend and it did really well. Highest pass we went over was 10,750 ft asl. Boost was still good.
I crawled under the truck today to look at the seal and it is leaking again.
Great idea on the vacuum bagging! The package says good for one year if kept refrigerated.
Update from our trip this weekend:
Had a great time soaking in the hot springs and hanging out with the best people.
Truck ran phenomenal! Now the best running IDI that I have driven. Amazing what a...
I could not find a smaller quantity; I used maybe 3.5 oz guessing by how far the gun pushed the end up the tube.
If someone is ready and willing to give this a try and keep us all updated on how it works out long term I’ll send what I have left over for just the shipping costs.
The more data...
Took the truck around the block. Now hitting 8.4psi, so better. The real story is how quickly it more builds boost and its at much lower rpm; before it was only boosting at 2000 rpm and up. Now it will start building boost as low as 1400 rpm.
The big question is going to be the longevity of the...
I have not been able to drive it yet for 2 reasons. One is that I got a case of “while I’m at its” and tore a few things apart. Then my irrigation line decided to rupture and that work sadly took priority over the truck.
Hopefully I can get it back together in the next few days after work.
Yes, I wire wheeled inside and out, then sprayed a bit of phosphoric acid up in there to address the rust; then rinse that out and wipe it all clean with acetone prior to applying the 8875-Thin. The Thin is very thick and sticks well. Used rubber gloves to spread it around the inside of the...
Just back from the heat cure. Wastegate wired open I drove around the backroads for about an hour. Had my camper on. Temperature ranged widely from 300-800F but not real consistent. Kept the rpm under 2000. Decided to get on a highway; much better. I was able to get up to 70 without too much...
Very cool!
Since you’ve done it so many times…
Maybe you could answer this question; I have my crossover pipe out and the y-pipe nuts off - it’s loose, but I can’t get it to clear the exhaust manifold studs and drop. Do I need to remove the studs or is there another trick? Does the turbo need...
Well, after lots of looking I found an industrial product that just might be the ticket to fixing these leaky downpipes.
Highest temperature rating for any RTV product I found was 750F. I think that it will work for a little while, but we know these joints are seeing 1200F and maybe more at...
I was hoping to this thread might shed some light on wether or not someone has tried the copper o-ring/gasket or even brazing a soft material to the bell of the y-pipe. Lots of guys have run up against this and most are more clever than me. The collective knowledge here about IDIs is astounding...
