Real world turbo towing limits - chime in!

The hoe by itself is right at 12K. Hauled that 2 hours on backroads but got on the interstate to climb monteagle mountain. Didn't win the race to the top of the mtn, but it didn't run hot. Factory turbo zf5, 3.55 gears.

    62 ranchero with an OM617

Flywheel is balanced with the motor. It probably won't be an issue.

    Rebuild, Power Stroke or Cummins?

I'll vote cummins too, and though I don't like the nv45 as much as the zf5, it would be simpler to just drop a whole drivetrain in and be done.

    Need 1 DRW rim

There were at least two different offsets used. You should probably measure to yours to make sure you find a match.

    Pinion on its way out?

That doesn't sound particularly like u joints, but an easy way to check them is to crawl under after an interstate run and feel them. Any one that is dry can cause vibration and it will be warmer than the others after driving.

All electrocity shut off at the same time. Won't start, no lights, etc

Fusible link issue. On trucks the main links are behind passenger battery coming off starter solenoid. Not sure where they are located in van. On more than one truck I have literally turned key on and then began wiggling wires behind the passenger battery till things light back up. Better...

    Power Windows

As for the door latch, It wears at the pivot point of the inside latch and the cable that connects to the latch stretches. I have replaced both the cables and latches at different times, and that works for a while, but for permanent fix, just buy the whole mechanism and be prepared for it to...

    Power Windows

Inside the regulator there are (or were in your case) three poly pucks. They connect the motor to the drive gear and act as a shear point in case a kid gets an arm or finger stuck in the window. They break down over time. Once they fall apart the window no longer goes up or down. You can...

New here, 94 E350 7.3 IDI school bus. Hoping to swap axles for increased MPG's

That is not a cab and chassis. That should be a standard SRW axle out of a van. Finding that in a 3.55 should be much easier.

New here, 94 E350 7.3 IDI school bus. Hoping to swap axles for increased MPG's

I do like 3.55 gears with the E4OD. I think your spring perch width is different from a truck however so you may have a hard time finding an axle.

New here, 94 E350 7.3 IDI school bus. Hoping to swap axles for increased MPG's

Is your current fan clutch unlocking? My clutch started siezing on my 94 and it immediately lost 3 mpg. I diagnosed it by sound. The normal loud roar when starting out cold was there, but it also came and went under low load situations on the interstate. Also, when you shut down after...

    Fuel mileage.

My mercedes has 448K on the original motor. I was very concerned about burning more oil, but it just wasn't an issue. We just got back from a 2,300 mile road trip and burned 1 pint of oil. That's really no different than what it burned with 15-40. Mileage on that trip was 26.6. Generally with...

    Fuel mileage.

My next thing to improve mileage is going to be to change oil weights in the IDI. I just replaced the 15-40 in my mercedes with 10-30 and we picked up 2.5 mpg. My guess is that the change will be less dramatic on a 7.3 liter engine than it is on a 3 liter one, but I am hoping its noticable.

    '92 f250 power loss

So that means you have pressure at the head, not suction, so look somewhere between tank and lift pump.

    '92 f250 power loss

How much fuel sprays out of the shrader valve on the filter head if you push it with the engine running? It should throw a good stream of fuel. I think the black smoke is red herring to your problem. That sounds like high elevation.

    '92 f250 power loss

You have a fuel delivery issue. The engine should not be sucking air between the lift pump and the injection pump unless the lift pump is not getting enough fuel to the filter, or the filter is clogged. If the lift pump is good, you need to check for obstructions between the pump and the tank...
  23. Shadetreemechanic

    '92 f250 power loss

Fuel filter should have positive pressure on it because the lift pump puts out way more fuel than the filter uses. Is your fuel filter light coming on? That indicates negative pressure in the fuel filter housing. Check lift pump. Disconnect the output from the lift pump and turn the motor...
