Speaking solely on the basis of street manners, would a computer controlled diesel always be superior to mechanical? For instance, if one would build a 1000hp DT360 and you put that next to a 1000hp 24v common rail, ( assuming you had a drivetrain that could handle such nonsense ) would it be...
I most certainly could, but that's not what I had in mind for this build. Any major work like that I will go from the bottom up. That was the other factor in the coveted 87 6.9. The bolt in cooling jets.
Grease-able throw out bearing!? Does my zf5 have that? If so I'll be under there tonight with the grease gun! Thank you gentlemen South Bend Kevlar it is.

What is the best pilot bearing/bushing to use for a 6.9 idi that will be going against the zf5 trans? I see mixed opinions on this kevlar bushing offered. Also am I correct in saying the 6.9 flywheel MUST be used and NOT the 7.3 correct? Thanks.
icanfixall: According to the serial number upgrade list the 86 I passed on did have press in jets. I verified the serial number in person. No matter really. I know the 6.9 I'm getting has bolt on jets. I was under the impression press in jets were a deal breaker for a rebuild candidate.
Out of curiosity I took a look at the body today on the ambulance when I returned the cavitated 6.9. I wish you would have messaged me sooner I could have got specifics for you. I can say this, it definitely has a barn door in the rear because I opened it to take a look. Passenger side single...
I thought they were unsavable no matter what!? Damn I passed up a good 86 block back in December because it had press in jets. I was looking for a bottom up rebuild candidate. Duly noted. I would still like to see this go to some happy home.
Sad, but I've decided to go with the stronger block. This is the 83 6.9 I was tearing into. Rotating assemble still assembled, over all in beautiful shape except for whatever happened with #1 cylinder lifter bores. All threads tapped and prepped for studs. I will gladly take pictures of whatever...
Holy Hannah good to know. I didn't pressurize the block, just the cylinder. That is scary. You got to think, pounds PER SQUARE INCH. That's a lot of pent up power that can be released.
I should also add there were crosshatch marks on the bottoms of the cylinders and the pistons said Mahle. Were those pistons from factory or was this engine freshened up? The odometer was 80,000 which I ASS-U-MEd was 180,000 but maybe 280,000? 380,000? Who knows the run time on the block, and it...
No I didn't. The regulator was set to 90-95. I don't believe this test is very feasible because if wanting to test a entire cylinder water would have to be filled almost to the top. I don't know if enough air pressure could build. I knew the suspect spot I was looking for and filled accordingly...
Forgot to take a picture but you were exactly right. The drill went through the counter balance lug. No matter anyway, the block is cavitation breeched.

It's rude, it's crude, and I'm still in disbelief it worked, but it worked. I traced the new head gasket and drilled holes accordingly. I then drilled a center hole big enough to install the tip of the blow gun. I raised the piston to just below the suspect area and sprayed a good amount of...
Thinnest strands of wire did not penetrate. I tried blowing air through the holes, no sound from inside the block. I filled the cylinder with water and kept the piston just below the suspect areas and shined a light down the coolant passages and didn't see any water, yet. I'll leave it sit...
Would installing the heads with injectors, filling the block with water and injecting air into the glow plug holes yield any results? I figure the top of the thermostat port would be the highest point and if the water is to the very top any cylinder breach would cause the water to react. I...
Check this out. I don't know if cavitation evidence is visible on the inside of a cylinder, but what do you think? Very suspect however. 85 6.9, 170,000 miles cylinder #2

Hello all. This week I plan on getting the 7.3 in the 89F350 dump into faithful "turn key" operation for the year. The entire fuel system is original. 130,000 roughly. I'm going to start with the injection pump, and replace it with the fresh pump that came on the 83 6.9. Since the injectors are...
Hello all. I made a deal for the 85 6.9 I got the Roto-Master first gen Banks turbo off of last year. I heard this run. I know it had a head gasket failure as can be seen in the one picture at cylinder 8. First I have to comment how much more burly this puppy is compared to the cracker block...
I took these late December while searching for plow frame parts. Some monstrous v8 international with a inline 8 cylinder pump, and based upon the injector angle, it appears to be direct injection. Anyone know what this monster is? Also a 6 cylinder Ford Diesel that I believe is called a...
