    6.9IDI Nightmare

Nope. It's not the easiest engine to work on that I've ever encountered, but I don't know why shops won't touch it. First, get a diesel compression tester and see what you've got... If it's really low, and the blow-by isn't just because your CDR is plugged up, you could then start looking...

So what did you do with your truck today?

thanks... it's a '65 F-350 I bought in '00. A previous owner stretched it a couple of feet and added the steel flatbed. I built the sides and tacked them up, and had a nearby shop weld it all up, and add a reinforcement under the crane, for $70. Wish it had a dump bed, I still have to throw it...

So what did you do with your truck today?

$0 is a good deal... on the other hand, I get this truckload for $50 at the local sawmill, and I don't even have to load it myself :D

    285 75 16 1990 f250 stock?

If that's the same body as mine ('93 F-250), the stock tire size was 235/85R16. But it had old 265/75's on it (almost exactly the same diameter) so when I got new tires, that is what I kept and they don't rub at all. Don't know about 285/75 though, sorry.

Great deal on a new turbo

I ended up buying one of these... figured for $209 I didn't mind R&R on the housings! https://www.ebay.com/itm/291653021708

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today's adventure: Temp got up to 38F after sleet/freezing rain + 4" of snow, and a drop to single digits... We took the pickup to town (a bit slippery on the minimally-cleared dirt roads, but 4WD comes in handy). On the way we saw a coyote running across the highway and a snow-covered field...

Great deal on a new turbo

I made an offer of 550 and they countered with 590. Wheeee.

Great deal on a new turbo

You need a bunch of stuff... the wye, downpipe, crossover pipe, intake hat, airbox, turbo oil line, valve cover, CDR valve connector... did I miss anything? ;) I got a factory turbo setup from another IDI and it was mostly a bolt-on. That's what I'd recommend. I had to make a braided steel oil...

they're only $595 shipped and no core... how much were they last night??

Great deal on a new turbo

I have a factory turbo setup I added to my 7.3 IDI NA, and I need a rebuilt or new, but I think it's a Garrett... does it matter who made the turbo?

    Air Intrusion Question

You DO realize that the President does not set oil prices, right? :Whatever: Also, in 1970 gas in SC was 19.9 cents a gallon, and Nixon was President. Can we get back to discussing IDI problems now?

86 6.9 idi no oil pressure at idle

On my '93 I jumpered the resistor in series with the gauge (on the backside of the instrument panel), and installed the proper sensor (variable) to replace the original idiot-light (either on or off) type. Now I have a stock gauge that actually shows changing pressure, although it's not...

    Engine sound difference

I can't remember what part it is, but recall reading that those plastic bits are something important in the IP coming apart? Anyone's memory working better than mine? ;)

That #$%^ serpentine belt chirp again!

As I mentioned earlier, a quick spray of carb cleaner on the back side of the belt immediately stopped the chirping. Started again the next day, though. So I got a 110.5 belt and it's quiet so far. It's the next size down from the 111.5 I had on there, and even with the tensioner all the way...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I removed my chirpy 111.5 belt. Replaced the idler pulley (that had a tiny bit of slop) with an alleged "Genuine Ford" part. At least the box is, but the bearing's rubber seal is marked "China"? Also I replaced the belt, with a 110.5 which was so tight that I had to partially dismount the...

More clatter than usual on cold starts.

Air intrusion? Once the air gets worked through, everything works better and the timing changes a bit too...

Reman IP fuel setting for existing turbo?

Did they do a complete rebuild (including a new rotor head)? I know the $400 "Dupont overhaul" ones at the chain parts stores don't...

    countershaft in zf 5

Since the gear is toast anyway, could you carefully cut it (thin grinding wheel) until your existing press can break it loose? This would take some care so as not to cut into the shaft, of course... Just a thought.

Reman IP fuel setting for existing turbo?

Or you could take the glow plugs out... makes it MUCH easier to spin the engine over for extended periods, and faster too. ;)

    Self oil burning

Reman heads, although available, are not that cheap. And what kind of work did they do - just slap it together, or actually check things like valve recession height?
  22. DrCharles

    Engine sound difference

Also, think about the showerheads (fuel pickups) in both tanks. Those are well known to crumble with age, and contribute to air intrusion especially when getting down near 1/4 tank.

    low compression

Definitely post all the numbers - but the heads are going to have to come off (as a minimum) with numbers in the 100's and only 200's on the good ones... Hopefully it's not time for a complete rebuild! I wonder if it was badly overheated - that can certainly blow head gaskets on both banks...

    New OBS owner

Thanks for the link :) Turns out I already downloaded that, but it's very useful indeed. Has anyone removed the turbo according to the procedures in that document (pg. 41-46)? It looks simpler than trying to unbolt the turbo from the pedestal while it's on the engine, for example...

    7.3 IDI definite exhaust leak

Thanks for the detailed case report... Once it warms up a little, I'll start pulling it off and ship it to Classic Diesel. Guess I should not depend on the screen to catch flying turbo bits ;)
