IP input shaft end play?

I just ran into an IP I have which has input shaft end play.
The end moves in and out about 1/8" or so.
The weird thing is... It still works fine! However, due to that shaft play, the gear can move in and out by 1/8", which actually changes the timing by a couple of degrees... so I'm going to have to fix it.

Any ideas on what might cause this?

Nothing good, I would suspect the thrust washer has worn down, possibly enough for the shaft to touch down on the housing. I’d drain it real well and filter for metal shavings. If you find any, junk it.

The shaft on the ip in my 6.9 moved like that and it was also leaking lots of fuel into the oil. Lots.

Sad pump getting ready to flood the crankcase with diesel. Time to a replacement pump. Agree with thrust plates well worn causing the slop.

I'll probably take it apart, pull a thrust washer/housing off of another IP(I have one with a broken governor assembly), and see what it nets me. I'm not afraid to jerry-rig an IP; they aren't *that* complex.
