Yes the title is a friendly jab at "no mufflers" lol

A couple years ago killing time on Craigslist got expensive. I found a beauty I needed to bring home.

The catch was no motor or transmission. He bought the car for the 427.

Oh well, picked up a 350/700r4 off Craigslist and dropped it in. Work got real slow and I ran out of money and time before I could get it running.

Last year we bought our own home. I was talking to the garage around the corner and he happened to have a Suburban with a 454 in it sitting out back. I bought it and drove it all winter. It was pretty rough.

I'm not very quick with my projects, but this brings me up to Sunday.

I finally got the motor pulled from the Suburban. I want to go through it, but I can't really afford to so it'll be a few seals and then drop it in. I'll update this whenever I get a chance to work on this.

I'll have to fix that when I get home. 1969 Chevrolet Caprice. I named it 2 years ago to be fair LOL

Sorry, I was posting on my lunch break. I had copied and pasted those pictures from a private message, that's probably the problem.

@no mufflers do they show up now?

The plan for now is to get a set of these headers: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hed-68190 and get it in the car. I'm strongly considering doing rear main seal and oil pan gasket while it's out. I don't think they're leaking but better safe than sorry.

I really wanted to do a re-ring kit but I know that would snowball and I can't afford it now. I'll probably need a new driveshaft and there's a chunk of change too.

Originally was a TBI 454 in the Suburban, I popped an old Q-Jet on it for now. I'm hoping to be able to send it out to Sean Murphy Induction(https://www.smicarburetor.com/) to get it rebuilt before too long.

Longer term plans are I hope to get this cam: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lun-10110702k

A little birdy told me I should shoot it with nitrous. I've never played with it before, but I might consider it eventually.

Oh Lucille why can’t you be true?

Probably because Momma let her baby grow up to be a cowboy. You know, picking guitars and driving old trucks.

To give credit where it's due... Momma Tried. ;)

Nothing much to report but finally got my headers, got them blasted and painted too!

Need to remember to grab some 5/16 bolts for the engine lift plate so I can pull off the exhaust manifolds and clean the engine for paint.

Got tired of waiting for myself to get around to finishing cleaning the block and said heck with it.

Primed it last night and sprayed it this morning. Just a quick back yard half job but I'm not too worried about it.

IH Red is what I chose for the block. "Chevy orange" is too overdone in my opinion and black is lame and my caterpillar yellow is too bright lol!

I did a decent amount of cleaning, between naptha on a rag from my parts washer and a couple cans of brakleen, even if the paint doesn't stick good, it'll still be easier to work on than it was covered in grease.

Well I finally have a little bit of money to put into this project so I did a little parts verification today. As much as I'd like to spend the money on a nice set of prototype injectors from
@Thewespaul the truck runs and the car doesn't, so that's that. Especially with next year being the car's 50th birthday, I figure I kind of owe it to her. Not that she will really care though, being an inanimate object hahahaha.

Well I needed to find out what kind of drive gear to order. This transmission has a VSS and not a cable drive. There are two types of drive gears, one is plastic with a clip that just pops off and the other one is a press fit steel gear that needs a puller. Guess which one I have? Can't make it easy, although having a tone ring I kinda expected it to be press on.

But wait... That O-ring on the tailshaft... Could I be so lucky???

Since the transmission came from a Suburban and has a bolt on yoke, I was afraid I'd have to order this:

https://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p6..._slip_yoke_1310_series_32_splines_fits_t.html

However, after careful inspection the factory slip yoke from the car (on the right) FITS JUST FINE and goes in all the way on this bolt-on-yoke transmission. I might get lucky with this one yet. Hey, I saved $100 if this actually works so no complaints there! Fits fine on the o-ring and the seal. I think I'll have to figure out how to clean up that rust though... (sorry for the crappy out of focus picture)

I'm going to toss a new timing chain on the 454 and a few gaskets to stop the oil leaks and hopefully drop this in soon. I REALLY want this thing running. Driving would be nice, but right now I'll settle for in the car and running!

Just have to get a couple other painful customer projects done first. There's always something!
