Ok brothers, here is a little update. Got everything taken out, scraped gaskets, and inspected cam lobes through the lifter hole with my borescope. All looked smooth best i can tell except the lobe on the very top left. Looks like there is a very well defined hole in it. It almost looks like a bubble of oil or water but i wiped my finger around in there and it remained. Because of the angle its really hard to get your finger in there to feel it. Sure looks suspicious from the pictures though.... Check it out.

Save up some $$$, you will be back in there again or find a spare to set up the way you want it.

I recommend replacing the cam. Your more than half way to doing that already.Bout the ONLY way of knowing for sure if the cam lobe is damaged is to degree the cam. You need plenty of time and room to do that with the engine in the truck or as its called.. In frame. Check ebay for nos cams with the gear and thrust plates on it. I have found several for around 130 bucks. I purchased all of them many years ago.

All,

Appreciate the concerns, obviously you guys are looking out for me and supporting me in fixing this truck "correctly". The goal right now however is for me to get er back on the road for 2 more years of light service. I dont tow much, mainly driving to work (8 miles) when it rains and i dont want to ride my bicycle and picking up larger items at the home improvement/contracting stores. weekend trips with the cabover will be the hardest work she will see but that can wait if the engine is giving me problems. I am replacing my roof next month and plan on breaking ground on a 24x47 foot shop with an ADU above next spring. Once the shop is complete i will have the space and time to do a lot more truck work. ill rebuild the whole engine from top to bottom, fix the AC, and a few other things. I'm thinking new lifters will get me by for a few more years until i am in a better place to do a "project" performance rebuild. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for all the advice.

Looks like you are going to have tire clearance problems where the hanger is...

Might want to come straight back from the axle bend a bit more before starting the angle to the side...

All,

On reassembly I noticed something pretty obvious I had not noticed on disassembly.

When compared to another rocker....

Even the "good" sides seem to have a lot of wear on them. Lots of galling too. I think what happened was that when the tops of 3 of the lifters failed the oil pressure likely dropped enough to reduce the amount of oil that was getting to the top of the engine. Does anyone have any experience with what level of wear on the rocker fulcurms would be considered normal if any? I ordered new rods and rockers all the way around, and upgraded to the newer style. There goes another $400.... Feeling a bit stupid to be putting nice new part in this thing without doing a full rebuild. I suppose the rockers, rods, and lifters should be usable for the rebuild as well as long as my oil pump is not shot....

That’s pretty terrible. I’ve got a bunch of used good takeoff rockers if you want to save some money. How many do you need? I’ll do $5 a pop

Thanks for the offer man, mighty kind of you. I would need the rockers because they have a bunch of galling on them now as well as the fulcrum pieces (not sure of the proper name). Do you have a full set of used ones you don't particularly want to hang on to? How much could I offer you for the whole set?
