Most of these trucks or any older truck after I get them, I spend a lot of time just repairing repairs from previous owners.

Make that any used item of ANY kind! cookoo
And of course my 25-year-old IDI was no exception. I was amazed it ran as well as it did, considering the huge number of "Missouri-engineered" repairs I had to undo and redo correctly...

I drive mine all over, without fret. I guess I've had enough new crap break on me, that at least with this old truck, I can muddle through fixing it; where as the new crap, well you gotta know the mechanics, and now the electronics.

Actually I was pondering this earlier while out. I'm not sure electronics, or computers are all that great; definitely for information gathering, sharing, and storing, but when thinking about the internal combustion engine, I think we're going on 300 year old tech; all adding electronics to it does, is re invent the wheel.

As a society, seems that's all we do now, reinvent how the wheel works; no real new innovations, or at least applied in earth shaking ways.

Ford, international, Cummins, no one wanted to go to electronics, but it became impossible to keep the trucks up to epa standards with the mechanical system, so if it’s anyones fault, it’s the epa....

Thank god, I'm just paranoid enough, to notice.... Sure it's the EPA, an extension of an over reaching govt. Our cars went to plastic electronic pieces of junk, and at the same time, out roll the police bearcats, MRAVs,and other heavily armored vehicles; isn't it funny the government didn't have those when we had real cars?

Hard for me to think it was just coincidence, and Uncle Sam was just looking out for 'our' best interests...
It's funny to actually see the slow slide from liberty to security, and the results there of; thank god we're all now 'safer than ever':bail

Im 21 I use mine for work. I like that it is mechanical because i am no good at wiring or electrical unless its real simple. A big part though is my first vehicle was a 6.9 and i learned alot about how they work and how to work on them. At this point i just want to keep learning about the motors. Now i am in a 88 7.3 idi. It took some work to get running but now its a good workhorse, worth all the work.

I hate to say it, but every time I pull up to a light and I see that new diesel I think of a $600 a month payment on a depreciating asset. Only with cars/trucks do we make such poor monetary decisions. Plus, they are extraordinarily expensive to fix, and many of the repairs are more involved (lifting cabs etc...) than most folks can't do in their driveways/garages. Sure, these repairs CAN still happen but they are much harder to accomplish than the way the engineers envisioned servicing the vehicle.

I have a lot of people who get confused with a 7.3 idi turbo and a PSD. for some reason when I say I turboed a 7.3 it becomes a PSD.cookoo

Well both being numbered 7.3 is probably why. Kind of how Microsoft branded the third xbox as "xbox one" so now you have to go out of your way to say "the original xbox" when referring to the first model.

I'll stick with my Turbo IDI. Not a fan of computer controls. Few mods & IDI will run, Ford detuned them back then to sell PSD's. I wouldn't mind havin a 7.3 PSD, best of the ps's except new 6.7, but they're loaded with EPA b/s. Here in Fl., people askin & gettin stupid $$ for 7.3 PSD's.
On another note, if you have an E4OD, get a good billet converter when you rebuild / change trans.

Yea, at the parts house, look for the older gent that's been around the industry, They can help you with the older stuff. Younguns & newbys only read the computer screen, otherwise they're lost...

Can't blame them though. That's all they are taught.

It's not just them. Several years back, I knew an older guy working in Auto Zone who had never heard of Type A transmission fluid.

I had to buy a new spark plug boot for my weed blower. My god, trying to get help from Autozone without answering year, make, and model was like pulling teeth. It is not just one guy either, the entire store is dumbfounded. Went to Napa and pulled one off the shelf for $2.30.

It's getting really, really bad. They require it to even look at their website now.
