I have a 2001 PSD E350 and an 84 E350 in which I first installed a 7.3 IDI NA and recently a 93 7.3 IDI turbo engine.

After I installed the first 7.3 IDI, I figured the two engines are the same size, Ford might have known what they were doing when the put the turbo on the PSD, so I installed a turbo meant for a 7.3 PSD.

It has worked well. It is remote, on the frame at about the rear of the transmission. When I installed the turbo engine I did not change anything related to the turbo.

That turbo has apparently died. The first indication was an oil leak. There is no muffler. I am now getting oil running out of the tail pipe and I hear what sounds like metal-on-metal at the tail pipe.

My stock, E350, 2001 PSD does not have a waste gate. The PSD turbo I had built does not have a waste gate. The 7.3 PSD turbos I find, are listed for a F350 and do have a waste gate.

I do not want a waste gate and it is easy enough to not use the gate on a turbo that comes with one. But are there other issues between E350 and F350 PSD turbos that could cause me concern?

What do you have as a return? If you don’t have a pump it’s probably just stacking the oil in the return. If the wheel hasn’t touched down on the compressor or turbine side then the turbo is probably fine

Pull the intake off and see if the blades have touched the housing, if they haven’t then your issue is the return

^ Forgot to mention that.
You really need a pump in that application.
Here's one by cxracing. There are cheaper ones out there. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/142139034148

I have several of those pumps. They are available from several sources at several prices. They have a thin, stamped, deformed cover. If it doesn't leak on day one it soon will. I am going to make a machined cover and see if that makes it reliable.
