im looking to where I can buy the adapter to time my 7.3 idi. Not looking to spend a to but it’s looking like I’m going to have to. Also will any advanced didgital timing light work once I get the correct adapter. I’m not looking forward to spending a ton because most likely will only end up using once when I replace my injection pump and injectors.

This is how we lose members on this forum. For the IDI newbie, it isn't the most intuitive thing to know how to time these beasts. Sometimes the biggest problem with researching these engines is knowing the right question to ask. If you don't even know that you don't know, then how do you search for what you don't know.

@culver21 , unfortunately, recently, the Ferret meter has been discontinued. There is another meter you can buy from a different source (ebay, i think), but I havent' looked into it because I already have a ferret adapter. But I've seen rumblings about getting the adapter on this and the FTE forum every few weeks from someone looking for one. They weren't cheap when they were in stock, and I'm assuming they are rising in price as the scarcity increases.

Others have recommended the Kent Moore 33000, available used on ebay. Design Technology makes something similar today: https://www.tinytach.com/timing-equipment

Those are available new on ebay as military surplus (I think): https://www.ebay.com/itm/DTI-Tech-T...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I just recently purchased one from the ebay vendor. They tell me that the one they are peddling has a 1/4" sensor clamp, which I believe is the correct size for our IDIs. When it shows up I'll try to hook it up to several of my trucks, and let folks know what I think.

I just went thru exactly the same frustration as OP. Found a source in UK that sells a similar unit to ferret on eBay. I understand u still need a variable strobe timing light (since only TDC marked on harmonic balancer). Unit was about $190 w shipping. Haven’t received or used yet but appears to be the current option unless can find a loaner or used ferret.

Unfortunately when I searched for it at Discount Tool wasn’t able to find- either they discontinued carrying or my search efforts were faulty?? ;-)

I saw that same item on eBay but wasn’t sure if it was the correct tool. Let me know when you get it and how it works.

This forum is a wealth of information on the Kent Moore J33300 and J33300-A meters. They can be purchased new for around $600.00 or watch ebay. I have owned and sold more than 15 of them. Several members here have purchased my meters. I do rent them with all the special tools. My fee is $70.00 for 5 days and that's 4 1/2 days more than you need for timing. My cell number comes with instructions too in case you have questions. Be careful buying from ebay. sometimes they are not complete. If you find one please send me a private message and I will give you my advice.

Received the gunson kit today and can’t complain. Checked and did decide to adjust my injector pump some but experienced same challenges reported by others- timing marks jumped around a lot. Tried several things to get to stabilize with marginal improvement. Suspect pezio-sensor is quite sensitive and picks up more than just pulses in injector line. Also can see the thin quartz-like elements of the sensor head and, as instructions say, could be easily damaged if operator got too aggressive tightening down the clamps trying to improve the signal. In retro too bad I didn’t know about the rental service mentioned above. But overall not disappointed with the equipment.

This is why I switched to this forum. I’ve explored other forums but the amount of unhelpful negativity turned me away. I’m happy to be a new member.

Although anyone can get carried away from time to time, most of us on here are genuinely interested in giving the best advice that we can while not being negative about it. From what I've seen, the "rowdy" ones don't seem to last very long. I wouldn't even DREAM of looking at any of the diesel pages on Facebook or other social media. I got lucky and joined what's probably the best place for good advice the first time by coming here.
