Hey all.

Dropped to cover off the ol 10.25 today. I was expecting bad gears simply because the pinion was wobbly when I bought the truck. Doesn't really look too bad to me? Just hoping for someone else's opinion.

Crappy cell phone pics, sorry.

Were these gasket or rtv from the factory? Mine had RTV so I'm assuming it's actually been changed at some point.

Put a crush sleeve eliminator kit in there, shim it(and perhaps the carrier) a little to take up the slack(would be nice to use some grease pencil and set the gear pattern close, but it'll still work if you are close and nothing is binding) and just run it.

That was a while ago. Honestly my buddy just torqued it down and it's been fine. No noise and it feels fine. I had just been expecting the worse is all, not knowing how long it had been run loose.

from what i can see it looks good. i just use rtv.

That's what I was thinking. I used RTV too I was just curious how they came new. I'm used to things being neglected but this truck has appeared to be taken care of mechanically even though it was beat up. I'm thinking it might have been changed unlike every other truck I've owned.

Looks good, I actually haven’t seen too many 10.25s that are completely wiped out, I’ve done plenty of fluid changes on them and found them full of water and mud but they still wore alright

Looks pretty good to me too.

From the factory it was most likely a gasket. Good rtv is really all you need.

I just did a 30k mike check on my new(ish) gears last night and yours look just like mine. Pinion bearings could be bad, but gears look fine

If you want to know for sure you can check the play with a dial indicator. If you need the specs let me know. I couldn't tell by the pics but if you haven't already you should use painted grease turn it around both ways a few times and check the drive and coast patterns. I can send you pics of what the patterns should look like. For the gasket I really like to use permatex right stuff.

Here’s a picture I took of the gear pattern when building my rear axle.

Mine runs a little closer to the heal than what I was shooting for but it’s still a good pattern. Most axle shops like Randy’s ring and pinion or east coast gear supply sells a specific gear pattern paint. Backlash is 11-16 thousands and carrier bearing preload is measured by runout on the carrier, it was 1-3 thousands on new bearings. I’d have to check for used bearings. Pinion bearing preload is measured by how many inch lbs it takes to spin the yoke, you’ll need a beam style torque wrench to check it. Used bearings is 6-8 inch lbs and it has to be checked with the carrier removed.

I wasn't worried enough to run the pattern and pull the carrier to check preload. I was more hoping someone would tell me it didn't look too bad visually. I was half expecting to see some kind of extreme wear when I pulled the cover because I know my luck. After I saw it it was more of a "lets see what everyone says" and not a fear of needing a rebuild.

I'd love to go through this axle sometime and put new gears in and a trutrac but that's quite a ways away at this point. I've got bigger fish to fry for the time being.

Thank you all very much for your input! It's really appreciated.
