I prefer to get it close with the drum off first as well but you have to grind the ridge off the inside of the drum for that to work.

Have you removed the drums yourself at all?

yeah the drums were replaced about 1,000 miles ago there was no lip on the drums. I pulled the stop away from the star adjuster and screwed the threads outward spreading the shoes. It really did not sound like shoes were rubbing on the drums but the driveshaft was making noise too so it was hard to tell but it did not get hot after I stretched the shoes out more. I did it all with the drums off.

it is easier to pull the stop away to lengthen the adjuster. it is spring loaded and does not hurt it a bit. I just held it away from the star with one hand and screwed the star out with the other.

Right. Won't hurt anything at all. And if doing it via removing drum and spinning it with your fingers, it will be easier.

My fingers have always still preferred to use pliers. I can't usually quite grab the smooth part and the teeth hurt lol!

Yeah maybe you still just don't have them tight enough. Another problem I run into is sometimes you'll tighten them "off center" and when you put the drum back on and stop they re-center and are loose again. I like to put the drum back on and step on the brakes once or twice and re-check. I've always found it to be a royal pain loosening the adjuster through the access hole so I don't over-tighten them and back them off like some do.

Umm, mine has an adjuster in the cable where the two cables come together for the single cable. It’s right behind the cab. I’ve tightened mine several times. Still doesn’t hold for crap.

This is a little over a year later and my e-brake pedal still goes to the floor. Now the e-brake will not hold the boat but will with the empty trailer. I forgot about this thread until I came back and found it again. I called the local Ford dealer and the parts guy said there is no adjustment for the cable on a 94 f-350 and unfortunately the cables stretch. There is the front cable and it connects to a intermediate cable and it connects to two cables one for each side. I asked him which cable was likely to stretch and he said he could not remember but he cannot get any of the cables as the truck is too old. I found a site online called parts geek that has 3 companies that make replacement e-brake cables but there are different lengths of some with no explanation. I have not called them yet but seems the front cable is stiff and the hardest one to replace because of the way the cable housing is like a porcupine that is easier to install than to take off. (probably would have to cut the cable in two to get it apart. Not easy to get a cable length measurement to see if it stretched. any ideas would be appreciated it is hard to back the boat down a steep ramp without tying the boat off to the dock when unloading boat by myself. The boat is an offshore boat 20' I suppose I could tighten the drums again but the e-brake pedal still goes to the floor.

The pedal assembly has a "ratcheting" feature that is supposed to auto adjust.
Iirc, the mechanism would fail. So ford came out with a little plastic wedge. To pull the front cable out. You have to release that mechanism. I replaced the front cable on my 94 powerstroke. It actually snapped. I bought whatever oreilly had in stock.
