on Saturday I filled up Barney and got about 5km before it started to die. rattling really load and smoking. limped off the expressway and into a parkign lot.

got it back to the farm after dumping a can of conditioner in (can was good for 380 litres) tank is aprox 130 litres.

today I removed the fuel filter and sucked out all the crap and when I cycled the key the fuel pump did not run at all. nothing coming into the bowl at all.

there was a lot of rust in the bowl and filter is pretty clogged looking. I went through all the fuses but none seem to be blown, I don't trust my led test light so I'll go at it again tues with a standard test light , can anybody tell me which fuses and relays run the fuel pump?

I was going to retire this old van this summer sometime but this is not how I wanted it to end. its been running awesome and getting great fuel economy up until this happened.

I have a spare pump on the same year donor chassis that was running until I ripped the rotted out body from it.

any help and /or advice welcome.

Fuel pump only runs for 20 seconds until engine starts, probably takes several cycles of KEY OFF/ON to fill filter.

update;
ground and power jumper wires to pump and van runs flawless . no hesitations. fuel seems ok now , pumped filter housing full and sucked it out 3 times. new filter installed. still can't find anywhere the correct manual for my van and its power dist box under hood so i still don't know which relay is the problem.

I was wonderign if I put the fuel pump on a toggle switch woudl the fuel system work with the pump running constant?

Lol I would also look to see where the fuel pump inertia switch is.
Even if there's been no collision, some have seen them trip. A few have even seen them corroded.

never thought of that one, its a work van but still has the side panels in it. I'll have to do some more research on location of the switch.

I'm a truck coach mechanic by trade but my own vehicles are usually so reliable I never have to work on them;)

changed relay to known good one from a parts van, fuse is good, jumped inertia switch. won't stay runnign good , loses fuel pressure and stumbles etc. with 12 batt source to pump everything is beautiful. I'm going to run a power supply to a switch beside the column and direct to the pump "+" and see how things go. hopefully it doesn't start leaking out of different orifaces ............
I was planning on retiring it this summer but still have jobs I need done before I park it. damn thing was running mint before this happened and gettign great fuel economy!

sold one of my parts vans to my brother's tennant for storage, with restrictions....... I can pull the powertrain and computer any time i need it, as long as it can be moved around with the loader tractor , sold it for more than I originally paid for it but never told my rich ass brother about it. its a 2003 E350 extended cargo van so lots of space and I gutted it . Everybody wins!
