Hey all! My brother just purchased a 2006 f350 6.0 auto truck and we are wondering: if you put on an egr delete tune do you need to remove the valve and cooler? It has a coolant filter from sinister diesel and the previous owner had the whole egr system replaced but with the stock parts.

Also who is a good tuning company to go with? I have heard good things about bully dog and sct but I am just wondering what you guys suggest.

No on the bully dog. Get the sct from one of the known companies. (CNC, idp, etc)
Yes, you need to remove the cooler and valve.

The cooler must go!!! On an 06 valve removal will throw codes and could throw your light. I left the valve in place with the cooler hole plugged. The valve can function with no issues or lights. So long as your cooler is done properly your good to go.

Id recommend the delete kit with the up pipe and not the plug.

SCT is the best on 6.0L no question.

You can actually weld freeze plugs in the end of the egr cooler and it still looks stock that way. You want the sct x4 programmer.

Freeze plugs have been known to corrode away and then you have no more delete.

I would go with something more permanent.

Well I've done more than a dozen of them with freeze plugs the first one being back in 2008 and they are all still holding. Not to mention as long as you aren't running 15 year old coolant, freeze plugs will easily last 30+ years.

... and I've seen them fail. Engine freeze plugs are a different application since they don't see the temperature extremes / fluctuations that the one end of an EGR cooler would see.

I wouldn't do it, there are better ways. To each his own.

Ok to each his own but I will tell you that as an ase certified master tech with over 12 years of real world professional experience as an automotive diesel tech, freeze plugs welded into the end of the egr cooler is a permanent fix and in my opinion the best fix. Especially if you live anywhere where they do emissions inspections and need or want it to look stock.

It's not just me. There are many threads like these over the years on the 12+ 6.0L forums

http://www.thedieselgarage.com/foru...r-stroke/64557-egr-delete-advice-warning.html

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1473863-6-0-egr.html

I think a stainless plate or plug would be fine to weld in. Freeze plugs are typically thin, and because of that, don't hold up well to 1200 to 1300 degrees and thermal "flexing". It will work, maybe for as long as you own it - but it may not.

If a freeze plug is used, at least use stainless. Brass melts at 1650 or so and gets soft way before that. Also with brass, you have the potential for galvanic corrosion (dissimilar metals) with the stainless EGR cooler and the heat. I wouldn't even use a mild steel.

I appreciate the fact that you are a Tech, I just disagree ... that's what happens on forums.

I see that your saying it has the potential to fail and you're right, anything mechanical can fail. I'm just saying that I have had to repair several delete kits and even some of the "bulletproof" egr coolers. That's why I posted an alternative fix that has yet to fail me.

Btw no matter what you do, to get the egr cooler out you are basically already to the oil cooler and they are high failure so I would just replace it. There are several places you can get a good oil cooler but I would buy the gaskets from ford or odds are you will be fixing a leak within the year. The ford oil cooler comes with gaskets the part number is 3c3z-6a642-ca. Other gaskets you will need for the job even if you don't do the oil cooler are 3c3z-9t514-ag, 3c3z-9433-ab, and 3c3z-9439-aa.

I have done quite a few deletes and use the SCT 1515 P tuner to do so. You can leave the valve in or totally pull the valve and use a block off plate. It won’t trigger an engine light.

Also, if you leave the cooler in. Have a thick block off plate welded. Or get a EGR cooler delete. I have done them both ways and no issues. More than one way to skin a cat here.

When I did my delete on my 06' I left the valve in. I still got an engine light. Code was something like egr flow.

When the EGR opens the computer expects a subsequent drop in flow from the MAF sensor in the intake piping. If it's not within the expected range it throws a code and the CEL.

My tune of course disabled the fault but if I ran it stock I got the code.

And when the EGR valve opens... It’s looking for temperature change in the intake Manifold. Has nothing to do with the MAF.
