I've found a lot of threads on vacuum pump removal and replacement, including the requirement to use a power steering pulley puller & installer. Autozone has a loaner that should work. I ordered a rebuilt from Rock Auto (half the price for the identical make/model at O'Reilly).

I have read that the bolts are to be put in their holes before pressing the pulley on the new pump, so they must be captured by the pulley. But I am not clear if the puller must be used with the vacuum pump in the truck, or are the bolt heads sufficiently accessible that the pulley/pump/bolts can all come out together?

(I'm 400 miles away from my truck for the next week so I can't just run out and look) :)

Edit to add: truck is a '93 with serpentine belt.

Okay put this here for you and @pelky350

The three bolts need to be in before the pulley is installed, or you can install the one that is blocked by the pulley from the back side of the bracket, effectively making it a stud. Makes removal and installation a breeze

OK, so it sounds like you're implying that the old pump cannot be removed with the pulley still installed, since one bolt is blocked from access? :)

Good to know, thanks. I was not looking forward to try and wrestle that puller with a fan, shroud, radiator all getting in the way! ;)

I believe the space is sufficient for the tool to remove the pulley easily. Please... Just DO NOT try to remove the pulley by the outside diameter. That ruins it. you need the special power steering vacuum pump remover tool. they can be rented too from many fakeass autoparts chain stores.

Terrible news! I now need a new pulley for it, I'm not sure it it was my friend kinda messing with it or maybe It was this trucks vaccume problem, pulley maybe slipping on itself, but when we sprayed it all down with wd 40 And went to the store we came back and the pulley was perfectly sheered off around the center part. we got a powersteering pump pulley puller to remove. new pump is on now and awaiting the pulley to be here in the morning. Hopefully It's the right one, I was surprised advanced auto had one. Finally after searching more I found how to remove the pump properly earlier.

@pelky350 Mine was bent when I got the truck from someone using a gear puller on the outside. I hated to have to buy a new pulley due to someone else's negligence but I decided to look on the bright side, the new one was already painted and now there's more shiny in my engine bay lol!

I thought those pulleys were only available from Ford for big $$$... good to hear they can be had from Advance. Any other sources (in case I mess mine up)?

I ordered mine through RockAuto.com $25 plus shipping last year.

Mine is V belt though so Serp may be a different price.

Where is it? The vac pump itself is hidden under "Brakes", but I can't find anything except the serpentine idler and tensioner pulleys. :dunno

Well unfortunately you're right. I just looked and they have the V belt one listed under 1991 but when I looked up under 1993 they don't list one. I'm sorry. For 1991 it's listed immediately after the pump itself.

Do you have the part number, or a link? I just searched Advance and all that came up for my truck was idler, tensioner and a/c delete pulleys... :dunno
