I painted mine off. If it was a heavy metal flake or pearl i'd say paint them on to ensure consistency. If you paint them off you can paint the openings while you paint the outside of the panel. Then paint the doors. Keeps it easy and no need to jamb it and mask it.

Looking good.

Off it is.

I’m a bit more than half done now. I’ll lay it down and finish stripping it this week. Looking for epoxy primer maybe Friday then primer Saturday and probably color Sunday. That’s the plan. We will see how it goes.

So with that primer you are taking it to bare metal? I really do not want to do that with my truck. Hell at the rate I'm going it won't start for another year!

You don’t have to. I basically am doing it to make sure there are no surprises. The areas where you have surface rust, you are already at bare metal. The metal needs sealed with something.

It’s shocking where the tipping point is on this thing. For reference it’s about where those pictures were taken.

The rest are small enough to use the light weight stuff. I’ll run a coat of the light stuff over those spots too. It’s all DTM material so I’ll do it on the metal and then epoxy prime it all to seal it. Then it’s primer and block party time!!

Man I wish it would warm up just a touch. 50’s are right on the edge of doable for me to make enough heat. Have to plan to shoot at peak daytime temp especially for the epoxy primer.

Have you tried spray polyesters like Slick Sand or Feather Fill? May be the ticket for large areas with minor imperfections. You need a gun with a pretty large tip like a 2.0 but they do a good job on large areas like that. I believe best practice is to epoxy under these products.

I have not tried those. I’ve got dolphin glaze from upol that I use sometimes. Usually I don’t get that deep in the weeds.
