hello all,

I'd like to go and change my transfer case oil, in the factory manual it states that you should replace it by Mercon.

It seems that Mercon isn't made anymore since 2006, it's replaced by MerconV.

I found some short films on youtube what seems to happen if you use Mercon V in your transfer case.

Now it seems that Ford is selling special Transfer Case fluid, XL12.

does anybody here know more about this subject?

I've always used a generic dex/merc ATF from either walmart or the parts store.

Merc V is supposed to be backwards compatible with the previous spec isn't it?

A few years back I changed fluid on ZF-5 and 1356 with RoyalPurple Max ATF--no problems 30,000 miles later.

I used to just buy the cheap supertech plain ATF. Extremely cheap. Lol
Last time, I think I went with the same stuff as called out for the trans. (Can't remember off the top of my head, I guess a mercV equivalent)

I use the Traveller brand stuff from Tractor supply, same as the fluid in my snowplow and mercedes tranny.

Your transfer case isn’t going to care what type of fluid you put in it.
Cheap supertech atf will work just fine, and is readily available at your local Walmart.

When I did mine I found a lot of people saying to use ONLY synthetic. Couldn’t find a lot of solid evidence on synchromesh or stuff like redline mtl. And then there were the guys saying they’d ran motor or gear oil for a bazillion miles with no issues lol. My 2 zf5’s, 2 bw1356’s, and m5od has valvoline full synthetic dex/merc and they all seem happy

Transfer cases have relatively large ball bearings and a chain. Some of them have clutches but if you're dealing with a part time 4wd lever shift transfer case as long as it's thin enough to get in the small spots they aren't very picky.

well, at one point there was somebody who thightened my filler plug in the transfer case way to tight, I couldn't get the thing out without totally demolish it. I thought it was a galvanised steel one, was I suprised when I saw that it was aluminium!!!

Does anyone here know where I could get them new? Ps we don't have a US Ford dealer where live. thanks.
