Good thing you pulled it... if that compressor wheel grenaded at 100,000 rpm the fragments of blades would have gone straight into your engine!
Well, the screen might have stopped the bigger chunks.

Another reason to run an intercooler

Just want to point out that tires and setup makes a difference when it comes to roasting tires. My '93 with decent 235 85 R16's just... won't really break them loose on dry pavement. It makes more top-end power, though. Last time I tried to break them loose, I just got wheel hop instead.
'92 with banks and stock pump, and worn 285 75 r16...will. it seems to pull harder off the line(banks turbo spools quicker) but makes less power up top due to the smaller pump. Of course, the lack of good tread probably accounts for that as well...

On slightly snowy ground, it's kind of interesting in my '93. Going along in 3rd or 4th, floor it and it won't break tires loose right away... wait for a couple of seconds for it to hit 2k RPM and build some boost... and /then/ it just breaks them loose. Really interesting behavior, but basically what I saw in my dyno graph - hits 2k and the torque just spikes.

After reading this whole thread, I'm tempted to get a $100 HX40 turbo and start fabricating my own system as a background project... mandrel bends are available in a huge variety of sizes. Guess the mounting flange and an intake hat would be easier to buy though...

Yeah an HX40 looks like it should work for a mild turbo build. I am actively searching for a deal on either a banks sidewinder, ATS093, or HX40, whichever I find first will determine the direction I go in. Regardless, unless I find one hell of a deal, I will be fabricating all the tubing and fittings myself.

On some non ford forums, I've seen people be quite happy with the Chinese turbos.
Now I'm not saying do or don't, up to you.

The company logo says "We are the leader of the industry. Provide the highest quality products with best price". From that alone you can tell it's China.

That was my next question, are they grenades or actual decent copies that hold up with daily use?
Although it looks like "real" Holsets can be had for about $170 or so anyway...

Interesting, I'd never heard of them before. Lots of info and videos around! I'm looking more for longevity than 1000 hp for a few seconds though... I'm more meticulous than sloppy as a mechanic anyway :smash:
