I got my truck back from the shop after 33 days... was supposed to be a week to replace the leaking head gaskets and out the door for $1200. Heads both had significant cracks so they had to be replaced too. Another $1200... but wait, there's more!
The already huge expected bill was $600 more than even that estimate. Turns out that everyone advertising rebuilt heads for $1200 a pair don't actually HAVE them and can't GET them... had to pay $1587 from a place in TX. Then there were a few other things (thermostat broken, upper radiator hose this close to failing, temp sensor terminal loose - he saved the parts to show me) and I had the oil cooler seals renewed while the heads were off. $200 labor for that, but would have been a fair bit more work with the heads on if (when) it leaks sometime later.
So now I'm keeping this truck for life, as I have to drive it until the wheels fall off! I did get 22 years out of the last one (my late father’s ‘84 that I got in ‘96).
And to make an expensive day even better, I got it home, and later on went to restart and it cranked, started and died just like it used to with the leaky mechanical lift pump... he didn't put a new return line kit on it. I may need to at least get some new O-rings. Anyway, after some quick troubleshooting, I found the electric lift pump wasn't running, although there was power to the shutoff (click when lead disconnected). I found that somehow I had wired the relay for my electric lift pump to the cold advance/idle speed lead instead of the fuel shutoff! Incredible as it may seem, my lift pump must have only been running when the engine was cold. Although the fuel filter light (vacuum at IP inlet) never came on.

Funny you should mention that... -cuss
My truck is now leaking diesel where it didn't used to, out the back of the valley pan and down onto the y-pipe and the ground... I TOLD the guy if he disturbed the injector return lines that we'd need new o-rings! He of course "doesn't usually have leaks".

And the temp switch (for the idiot light) is the wrong one or defective, since it lights the "ENGINE TEMP" lamp as soon as the wire is connected, even when cold. Already called, going back over tomorrow for the correct switch! I ordered two 10-packs of softer Viton O-rings from McMaster and they may arrive tomorrow. I'm seriously considering just replacing them myself (the return line kit is fairly new and the hose and clamps are in good condition). Wonder if he'll want to charge me after the hefty four-figure bill I just paid, especially since he caused it! cookoo

At least the new heads (and head gaskets) are working fine and no coolant leaks.

So I spent the afternoon wiring up a 10" subwoofer and a "vintage" Alphasonik Autosub 100W amp that has been in many of my cars since '85 or so when I bought it. Sounds good now, and you can even hear it over the diesel

This evening I also made a bracket from 1 x 1/8" angle iron to mount the amp behind the seat without drilling holes through the back of the cab. Welding is fun when you have a decent welder... wish I'd bought my Hobart Handler 140 years ago

I didn't even start mine... no point in dripping diesel in the driveway, while I tuned up the stereo. A single 10-incher in a sealed box is all the thump I need. Going to the muffler shop Monday morning to have the y-pipe repaired.

Installed factory turbo valve cover to today to replace ol'drippy valve cover with half assed CD-R breather set up I had put together. Maybe it will actually pull the vapors out now and with a baffle in it it may not eat so much oil through the intake, oddly after changing my oil and adding a powerstroke filter I accidently added a extra quart on top on the extra quart and that was okay it leaks oil anyway, it did leak some extra for one day now it's oil leaks seem to have slowed extremly and it's not leaking the extra oil out now??

Had one of "those days" with the truck today...

Drove it to top off the fuel since I run out between 1/2 and 1/4 tank. Got some surging headed to town. I figured it was air in the lines somehow. I had just over 1/2 tank when I shut the truck off.

Got it filled up, started it and got on the road when it died. Coasted it into a parking lot, let the e-pump run and purged the filter at the schraeder valve. Fired right up and with a little odd clattering noises it cleared up and smoothed out.

Got our shopping done, got home, went to unlock the rear door and the lock came right out of the door....

I love this truck but it's really starting to drive me nuts! Not only is my lock broken, I'm pretty sure my fuel gauge isn't reading right either......
