I hope I'm wrong, but could a glow plug tip have broken off and lodged in a piston top? You ARE using Motorcraft GP's and not Autolites?

Yeah ,all Motorcraft GP's . I thought about some thing like that. Hopefully that's not the case with a tip breaking off. The noise is every revolution so I'm not sure if it's the thermostat.

Could it? Yes.
Could it with a beru? Yes.
I don't see this being thermostat related. More like the thermostat was bad, overheated the engine, causing a hg leak. And that's the noise that was heard.
I've seen a engine with a busted piston skirt make a noise like that.
We can sit here and play guess who all day til we're blue in the face. But there's only one way you're gonna find the cause....

Hi all ! Just wanted to follow up on my issues. Finally had a chance to dig into the engine, turns out I had a broken rocker arm on #1. While everything was apart i checked all push rods and glow plugs. All good. However, I did notice that all my rocker assemblies were resting on my head studs at the corners. Which probably explains why one broke. Lucky it was worse. . Took off each rocker and ground a little off each corner. Problem fixed . It wasn't much bit I'm sure it put a lot of stress on the rocker when tightening it down to the pedestool. Thanks again for all the help

I did. I had heard some people had trouble with them being a bit long. Not sure how I missed it. It was easy to fix with a quick buzz on a grinder. None of them were more than 3/16 to long. Definitely something to be aware of though as I found out.

This is almost exactly one of my symptoms that I described in my most recent thread about ticking and intermittent valve noises. I guess I'm going to find out within a month what it is, if I don't drop a valve by then. Still hoping it's just lifters.

Mine has been thumping too. I'm to the point of pulling the heads...don't wanna but gonna try new lifters, push rods, and rockers first...

Both of you who are experiencing thumping or chuffing: do not run the truck! Figure out what the issue is first and you will avoid much more expensive damage.

I have no choice unfortunately. It's been thumping for a year or so, gulped once for about 30 seconds or less on startup a week or so ago and last week or chuffed for a few minutes and also hasn't done that since.

So I've had the weekend to work on the truck. Replaced the lifters, pushrods and double checked each rocker arm assembly twice. The noise is still there. Sounds like it's in the passenger rear but not 100 % sure. I pulled the Injectors after some excessive reading and youtubing. Couple injectors look pretty rough with rust deposits around the base of the threads. Nothing excessive but none the less it's there. On those same injectors the cups have "hot" marks on them. BTW they are Delphi injectors and really don't seem that old. The guy I bought this truck from said they had been replaced but doesn't remember when lol the truck itself is a retired service truck bought and used I n nashville all her life. Has 159,000 original miles. All the sitting has apparently been quite hard in her. What are yalls thoughts? Gonna try to get them pop tested tomorrow, I hope...

Pop testing is definitely a good idea. You are definitely going to want to replace all 8 at the same time if it's determined they might be a problem . I bought Stage 1's from R&D and have been really happy . You won't have to pop rest those.

Does r and d have a website or is that a user in here? Don't think me too dumb lol I've searched ebay like mad for bigger injectors and found nothing.
