Please explain why you "need" to replace freeze plugs... Several members on this forum have the special tool. A note of free advice. Use ONLY original freeze plugs. Nothing after market will work. Original plugs are designed to fit the special groove in the block plus... They are designed to fit tight before install so they actually cut into the cast iron block. Please use a sealant on the plugs too. Ask what others use because many ideas available.NEVER try to install plugs without the special tool. Because these plugs are not the standard cup type there is no way to check if they are installed correctly. This is why you and others get the recommendation to use the tool.

I...dropped the arp thread chaser into the block. And cannot figure out how to get it out of the block without taking a freeze plug out to retrieve it. Basically I'm an idiot

OK... dID YOU LOOSE IT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE BLOCK??? iF SO JUST REMOVE THE BLOCK HEATER AND FISH IT OUT.aNOTHER WAY TO GET IT OUT IS PURCHASE A RARE EARTH MAGNET SMALL ENOUGH TO REACH DOWN INTO THE HOLE YOU DROPPED IT IN. mIGHT BE ABLE TO GET IT OUT THAT WAY. Sorry for all the caps. My fat fingers and turning off the sound is my problem...

Gary, I thought about a magnet. But.... going down into the coolant passages of a cast iron block... May not turn out well. Lol

Can you turn the block upside down to make it fall back towards the deck of the block?

Sure, just pick it up and shake it until the chaser falls out :D

I have had some success retrieving dropped objects with a flexible shaft "grabber" tool.

Ive tried just about every magnet and grabber I can come up with. It was the rear drivers side. Only way I can figure is take the rear plug out.

Live and learn I guess.

It just now occurred to me to ask, is this engine still in the truck, or on a stand or the floor?

Right, Jasper. I did assume that the engine was on a stand. Since he dropped an ARP thread chaser inside a coolant passage, I assumed that he's in the process of installing studs and I figure that most people would do it on a stand despite the fact that so many seem reluctant to pull the engine out and want to know how to install the stud with it in the truck.

I have a rare earth magnet about 5/16 dia stuck inside a piece of rubber air line works good for fishing out stuff, tube prevents it from sticking to every thing else. I have some freeze plugs tools I made, have sold a few of them, have some left, PM me, maybe rent or loan to you.
