ok so i picked up this 2004 dana 60 and im going to make it work fin in my truck. the guy that i bought the axle from said he just put new auto lockers in the hubs. so my question is can i rig up a solenoid from a 1999-2004 to work these hubs??? or is manual just a better way to go

Use manual hubs. There is a lot more than a solenoid. The transfer case is different and the electronics are needed.

you could probably make them work all you would need is vaccumm and a pulse lock selonid and a switch.'
haveing said that there are not many factory set ups still working. i know at least on our quarry trucks there arent any still going, on the couple that i have had they dont work.
I am suprised however the ones on my 13 still work even at 177k

With a manual transfer case the hubs will only lock when stopped. Automatic hubs need a transfer case with a clutch or synchros to get the driveshaft spinning up to speed for the splines and collars in the hubs and transfer case to engage.

Seen on a automobile video about a Detroit line lock just curious if our idi's could handle that since they are limited slip

Uh... I've dropped my 1356 into 4x4 at speed before, with the hubs unlocked. No grinding. And I know the hubs are unlocking properly(axle shafts spin freely when disengaged)

Pulling the lever back does not mean 4wd is engaged even if the 4wd light is on. A little spring actually pushes the collar into place once the lever is in position. Also unlike a transmission the cogs have very little play to each other and square in shape. The cogs will easily glide over each other without engaging or grinding or creating enough drag to spin the chain, output shaft, driveshaft, and front end. I have also pulled the lever into 4wd at speed, no grinding, but the front drive shaft never engaged. I've messed with the automatic hubs on a manual trans, does not work well. Now if you had a chevy transfer case with synchros...

Either or to be honest and yes big difference between the two.

Just curious is all since most 2wd idi's that I've seen have posey track would think u could make it a full lock or use a line lock if u wanted to hotrod ur truck

we just cut off bearing/hub assembly on a 99 SD, auto hub was seized in unit bearing, will have to do other side also, just trying to replace ball joints, less then 150 k, auto hubs obviously never pulled out and lubed by PO, the die cast grew into the cast iron, were in rust belt also, post up pics later. Even cut groove around auto hub and used bearing separator and puller to grab hub and that wouldn't move it, we just wanted to try to save bearing at least! 2 hubs & 2 bearings $$$

Manual hubs all the way. I changed the ball joints on a buddies 06 f250 yesterday. He has the 6.0 and the auto lock hubs still don't work even with new seals and o-rings in the hubs. It only has 80k miles on it, and isn't driven much in the winter. He's putting in manual hubs soon anyway so I didn't bother to track down the problem.

On a side note, whoever decided that a 1/8 inch thick snap ring on the axle shaft was a good idea should be taken out back and beaten. Luckily I had pliers for it.

There is a reason people swap the newer hubs to manual, not the other way around.
