it was definitely the heater core, it was plugged with the same crap that kills oil coolers on these trucks, I changed it as opposed to trying to flush it, I didn't want to risk plugging another oil cooler, I've already done two of those. It makes me wonder if doing the heater core should be part of the EGR delete/initial oil cooler change out?

Good deal! Some people will fill them with clr and back flushing is pointless. These heater cores aren't difficult to replace. Much easier than their little brother 150's. And I agree, may not be a bad idea. Most oil coolers I see are toast at 100k.

As far as the fan clutch goes, the blue wire mod is an option but not a fan of it. A good working system will keep em where they need to be temp wise.
With the fan at 100%, they really suck the power. Some swear by it or do the 7.3 fan clutch mod to make em mechanical. Only known benefits is they kick in a bit cooler than the pcm driven 6.0l clutch and wont shut ya down if the clutch fails. Unplugging the fan clutch harness will just set a soft code and if it fails, unplugging it will get ya home.

To turn on the fan with a switch:
Add a switch to the dark blue wire in the fan connector at the top of the fan shroud. This connector is a five wire connector and the dark blue wire receives a GROUND connection from the PCM when it decides that the fan needs to be turned on. After turning on the switch to send GROUND to the dark blue wire, the viscous fan clutch heats up (it will take 20-50 seconds or so to fully heat up) and the fan will engage and run with a lot of sound!. After turning off the switch, the viscous fan clutch will still be hot, so it takes a minute or so for the fan to slow back down. Again, the dark blue wire is for GROUND only, not 12 volts! Also, the heater in the clutch draws about 1.25 amps or so. You can use a 16 gauge wire and a small toggle switch. Just make sure you do not cut the blue wire such that the PCM can't ground it when it wants to
