so I see summit has a pan for the e40d that holds an extra 4 quarts for two hundred and something bucks. Not knowing much about transmissions, is it worth the money for extra capacity, or a waste of money? I also plan on putting a 6.0 style cooler on it, as I've read they are the best for cooling? Someone can clarify for me if there is a better choice. Thanks

The extra capacity will take longer to heat up/overheat, but also once its hot/overheated it will take longer for temps to come back down.

Ok, so axe the transmission pan.
I'm gonna order a mishimoto cooler as they seem to have a good quality 6.0 unit.
Living in this hot ass desert, I want the most cooling I can get.

Some years back I purchased off ebay the Mag Tech aluminum E4OD trans pan. New they are really expensive so check ebay if you decide to get one. They have an extra 2 gallons of atf fluid...

Better off with the cooler, get the biggest you can if you tow heavy. Heat is what degrades tranny fluid.

Get both, more fluid is just a bonus. My experience has been positive. I have mag Hytek pan with larger cooler, no where near 6.0 size (30,000) I think. Also derale pan with cooling tubes is comparable and much less in price (I’ve had both, changed because I got mag Hytek cheap). As you can see in photos (yes it’s my powerstroke, same setup on idi ran cooler for some reason) after 182 miles on a 92 degree day, my trans temp is 164. At this point I’m on a 4% grade and am towing 34 ft tt (8000 lbs). Just my experience, you can never put too many add ones to your truck.

Just get a 4R100 pan. I ran a Motorcraft steel one on my dually. Has a drain plug and IIRC 1 qt extra capacity. They run about $35.

4psi boost? That’s not much with that egt for a 6.0

I'm planning on selling the class c and getting a fifth wheel, hence the reason for the upgrade. We usually only camp in the lake havasu area which is hotter than Vegas.

Good eye 79jasper, I'm only turning 2002 rpm. If I ran faster boost would increase and egt decrease. It is intercooled also.
Not sure how much that affects boost numbers. Also reading boost with Edge and not mechanical guage. When I look at all
the gauges, I think it's running great. To OP, hope this helps you lay awake at night still wondering what to do LOL.

Kenny I do not recall any idi E4OD trans coming with a pan that had a drain plug but the later powerstrokes had one. Just a note on draining trans fluid without a drain plug in the pan. The pan corners have bolts with longer threads. Those are loosened but left in.As the other bolts are removed eventually the pan will sag and fluid begins to drain over the gasket lip. Its messy but it will get the level low enough to drop the pan completely.
