So my plan is to use a oil pump from summit racing https://www.summitracing.com/parts/til-40-524 and plumb into the ports on the radiator for an automatic transmission but my question is have any of you done this sort of thing with a zf5 speed also should I have the new pump ran off a temp sender or constantly cycling fluid? Also while I’m doing this sort of work would it be a good idea to install a remote filter ?

When I first got my truck, started towing, and looking into gauges, I read about this a lot. EVERYONE, agrees that the zf5 doesn’t get hot enough to justify a cooler or temp gauge. Even with that being said, I still have the desire to get one of these.

Air cooling fins and added capacity on the pto covers for like 160$. I’ve also read back and forth that the zf5 wasn’t designed to tow in 5th yet some say they tow in 5th and haven’t had an issue. Personally I run 4th and 5 mph slower. Might help with temps, idk, but it makes me feel better

having external cooling on a ZF6 is required, but on a ZF5 is rarely heard of. I can tell you on the trans in the Nostromo, it is not "settled" in until after an hour of driving. the noise is completely different. I'm sure the pump is a good one, it's specific for the purpose.

Has anyone compared trans temps?
What is different with the zf6 that it needs cooling?
I heard the gm's that ran the zf6 didn't have the pump/cooler, and also saw issues.

the ZF6 has more moving parts and is one seriously huge SOB. I look at it this way, if there is a item on a OEM list for a vehicle, it was a hard fought battle to get the company bean counters to approve it.
